Looking for good orchestral classical.

I am looking to expand my classical collection and I feel that vinyl is not the right medium for quiet sonatas because of the surface noise. All I buy currently is vinyl and I find that orchestral classical drowns out whatever surface noise is there. Therefore I want to expand my collection with orchestral classical. I am looking for things a little off the beaten path. I love Beethoven and Mahler; I want to expand from there on. Thanks for the friendly head-fi atmosphere. Every time I post a thread I get a warm response.

Cheers.

How little off the beaten path? And Vinyl? Good luck. See if you can find LP versions of:

Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet on a London 3 record set from Cleveland/Maazel
Raff: Symphony no. 5 on Nonesuch or Unicorn with London Philharmonic/Herrmann
Smetana: Ma Vlast on an RCA set with Horst Stein
Gliere: Ilya Murometz (Symphony no 3) on Unicorn with Harold Farberman

Those are old LP sets I still have, and play from time to time. I'm sure there are LP dealers that would have them or be able to find them.

If you want obscure, vinyl isn't terribly practical. Garage sales and used record stores are your friend though.

Thanks. I usually buy reissues or do buisiness with gemm. I mis-spoke when I said I wanted "off the beaten path" classical. I meant lesser known classical for the lay person. For instance I bought a Karajan conducted Don Quixote. Strauss is well known but I would have considered it off the beaten path. I made a mistake, so, please scratch the comment. Any good orchetral classical of any familiarity? Sorry for the mix-up
