OT question: i have no idea what a maxxed WA6 means, but does it have the same power output as a stock WA6 with pdps?

Yes, it just means they upgraded the capacitors inside to Vcaps and blackgates, but the power is the same.

Tom's Hardware posted a light review of the HD800 and UE8 today. The edge was given to the 800s, but no information was given on what equipment in the way of a DAC, Amp, cable balancing, power, etc were used.
It's still a nice light read if you're anxious for the first release of HFQ, and can be found here:

Speaking of Synergy - I have found the Grahm Slee Solo SRG II is a much better match with the HD800 than the original Solo SRG was, and it is a great match vs other amps in it's price range. http://www.head-fi.org/forums/6266656-post14.html

I hadn't gotten a chance to carefully read this review until now. Great stuff, probably one of the most informative reviews I've ever read. It also helps that you used so much equipment as points of reference.

Larry, I wanted to get your thoughts on what the aftermarket cable did to the sound of the HD800s aside from making it smoother.

I think the Warren Audio cable warmed them up some, and improved sibilance issues with bad recordings, gave me more flexibility with choosing tubes and source for my ZDT, and it improved detail at the same time that it made them smoother.

Sorry for raising a thread from the dead.  I had forgotten I ever did this review until I was searching for posts by me and it pulled this up for some reason.  I fixed the broken links in my review, and made an addendum at the bottom of the review.  Note - the improved detail I mentioned in the post above was vs the stock cable, and it was by a small amount.  In comparison to my other cables the X10 cable now sounds slightly dulled down, and it's simply too thick and heavy to use regularly.  I went back to my other cables after a couple of months, and I currently use the Locus-Design Hyperion.  I'm willing to bet that a Moon Audio Blue Dragon would be another good choice, and I may get a balanced one in the future.
