Moving away from my K701s to..

Short version: HD600 a safe choice? I listen to mostly quite light music, i'm not a basshead. Didn't like HD650's bass/veil. Considered K501 and K601.

I've decided that I don't particularly agree completely with the sound sig of my K701s. I've started feeling my music feels a lot colder since i've collected a couple of other headphones. I'm also finding them a bit too bright for my liking. However I like the detail it presents. Where do you guys suggest i should head?

I'm not particularly a basshead (K701's amount of bass is good). I listen to mostly Drum n Bass (liquid funk), some pop, classical, jazz and a small bit of rock. All mostly quite light music.

I've got MS1's and I dont quite like their lower midrange (around 100hz). I find it waaay too overpowering.

I've been quite tempted by HD600's although I have been a bit unsure about them since i didn't quite like the HD650's (their veil was extremely apparent to me -> Listned from a LDV + LDDAC).

I hear DT880s are quite sibilant which has put me off considering them a whole lot and Grados are superaural.

So.. think HD600's a safe choice? Else any other recommendations? I've considered hunting a pair of K501s or going K601.

I have the 701 and use a tube amp with a Marantz DV6001 not bright at all. I also have the Shure SRH840 does everything so well. The 840 received a fantastic review and is considered the best cans under 400.00

If you didn't like the HD650, chances are big you won't like the HD600 either. they are more similar than different.
DT880 may be the one you are looking for in this range, see if you can give them a try. FWIF: I compared it to my HD650, a bit clearer and without the bass hump. Not bright to me, but I heard them at meets so not that long.

I'd say HD600 is a safe choice, but you really have to demo a pair to decide. Get a used one from FS forum or retailer with good return policy.

If you think K701 is bright, don't get DT880 near your head at all.

If you think that akg k701/2 are bright then it akg k601 will not be an option !
Akg k601 are bright and less detailed than akg k701/2 and you need some serious amp.Akg k601 are harder to amp then k701/2....
Why dont you get an amp with warmer sound it would be great with 701/2?

I have a pair of HD600 coming in next week as I am in a similar position where I wanted warmer sound than my AD900. I also have heard the veil of the HD650 and am concerned about this Senn sound trait. While I won't be able to truely compare my HD600 against your K701 I will tell you how it sounds from a veil perspective and compared to my AD900 which are also very bright.

I have all three. K710, HD600 and HD650.

My 701 is new, but believe me, going from a 701 to HD600 is like putting cotton wool in your ears!!

I hear that the 701's will settle with LOTS of time though.

I'm with loopfreak - if you find the 701 bright, you are not going to enjoy the 601 at all ...

AKG shot themselves in the butt when they discontinued the 501, IMO. If you want headphones with a balanced sound signature that will still entertain you, try the DT250. I might be a Grado fanboy, but I can relate to the desire for something a little closer to the middle road, and the DT250 might be what you are looking for.

The only hps that maybe I can consider after the K702 it's the HD-800. I'm waiting for new AKG to show up soon...

I think the HD600 are vastly better than the K701, but you are going to lose quite a bit of treble detail in trade for a more balanced sound. You will also be losing a bit of width in the sound stage.

If you are looking for both the K701s best traits and the HD600s best traits, and also vastly improved speed and detail then you best save up for the HD800, it's the only headphone I can say with confidence will do what you want it to and be a huge improvement over the 701s. I prefer the HD600 to the 701s but I don't know that you will, I DO know you will prefer the HD800 significantly.

It's not the treble issue, it's the resolution allover the spectrum this why the 800 sounds more close to the K701/2 than the 600 or the 650. lol, op if you don't like the 701 not sure you'll like the 800.

Perhaps it is an amping/source issue then, i really just went went on a few peoples' review of what I currently own and sorta went on an impulse buy. Didn't really quite think of that, whoops.

I haven't reall had much time with different headamps with the same 'phones (never really tested my friends' setups).

Soo.. I'll look around the FS forum a little when I get a bit more money, perhaps i'll just pick up a HD600 and a more substantial headamp then make a judgement from there. Perhaps a better source.

The resolution of the K701 is amazing imo. I was listening to a BBC recording today, where the noise of the conductor's clothes rustling was really getting on my nerves in the quiet passages. I was also listening to Jazz at the Pawnshop and you can really hear the sax player turning his head when he gives solos over to someone else.

They take a very long time to settle apparently and then a bit more warmth appears.
