Help with Japanese Edition Classical & Jazz CDs!

Thread Starter
So I'm off to Japan in about a month to visit friends and family ( in-laws) for about 2 weeks. Of course I don't need to point out that i will be spending a lot of time shopping and checking out headphone-audio stuff while i'm there.

However, I really would like to get some ideas on Classical and Jazz CD's I should try to get while I'm there. I have been into classical music for over a year now and already have built a nice little library of classical CDs (~100 albums). As for Jazz I just started to get into the genre and only have a few albums but so far really enjoying it and would like to get more exposure to it.

I sometimes read here on the forum and elsewhere (forums, reviews etc) of japanese versions of some albums that seem to have better sound mastering than the ones in the US or are only available in Japan. As the CD prices are more expensive in japan, I would like to limit my CD shopping there to only those which cannot be found here in the US or those imported which cost considerably more.

so If you have any suggestions I would love to get some ideas from you all!

As a starter I just saw one thread here and after checking some reviews and listening some samplers I am planning to get these two albums.

Midnight Sugar [HYBRID SACD - DSD] - by Tsuyoshi Yamamoto trio
A Love Supreme - John Coltrane

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I would check out Sadao Watanabe, who is arguably Japan's best-ever sax player. He has a wide range of recordings ranging from bossa nova to more traditional stuff, from the 60's to today. His newer work is more mellow and there are some albums that incorporate strings as well.

My favorite Sadao album, recorded live at the Budokan, with some all-stars like Dave Grusin:

HOW'S EVERYTHING Sadao Watanabe [CD]

A cool bossa album:

Made In Coracao Toquinho & Sadao Watanabe [CD]

Another favorite album:

Fill Up The Night Sadao Watanabe [CD]

There are some cool Japan-only CDs of American artists playing jazz versions of Enka music including Sam Taylor.

Ketteiban!! "Sam Taylor / Kayo Blues" Best Sam Taylor & His Orchestra [CD]

Another nice guitar album involving and American artist and Japanese tunes:

Discover Japan Chet Atkins [CD]

I have been impressed by the sound quality of all of the Japanese CDs I've purchased, and I jump at the opportunity when I see them for sale here in China.

Almost forgot, also check out Yoshio Kimura. (木村好夫) He is one of my favorite classical guitarists, and combines many genres of music for a really unique sound. Many of his albums are just enka, but he has a large variety.

Yoshio Kimura Enka Guitar Tokusenshu Yoshio Kimura [CD]

By the way, Sadao Watanabe's name is 渡辺貞夫.

Enjoy your trip!
