Printing - USB vs. Ethernet

Thread Starter
I just bought a new printer and I can set it up using USB plugged directly into my PC or ethernet by plugging it into my router. There may be a rare occasion where I would want to print something off of my laptop, but other than that I really don't need the printer to have networking capabilities. Are there any other advantages to have the printer connected via ethernet instead of USB?

If your printer is over 15' away, then you might need to get an active USB cable (no such problem with ethernet). Those cables are not too expensive, but it's still an extra expense.

Not really. If it's on USB on another machine you can still share it with another PC on the network.

If it's no extra trouble, you might as well set it up via ethernet for those rare occasions when you'll want to print from your laptop.

I've got my printer in the house hooked via ethernet and it is great.
Not only does it save me a USB port, the computer it would be connected to doesn't need to be on.

Also, any computer on the network including guests can easily print without any setup.

My vote is for Ethernet!
