Interesting article. And by our own gbeard. Very true regarding component matching with the K1000, makes a world of difference.

I also agree about the component matching. The K1000 is easy to get "wrong". I think the 3 main issues of concern are harshness, lack of bass, and soundstage. If any component rears it's head with harshness, it's tough to enjoy the K1000s. Since the K1000 is a bit lacking in bass, it's important to make sure there's enough power and headroom for the bass. As for soundstage, it's about detail and low noise floor. I find that it's not believeable unless the components are up to par.

Hi guys,

You know its funny, I have a terrific preamp and amp by almost anyones standards. They certainly do make great music with my speakers, but they didn't mate well with the K1000's. Synergy between components is far more complex than merely buying excellent gear. The K1000's were not harsh, but they were bright. The Berning/First Sound combination have really great bass, and so I don't think that was a problem. The bass sounded excellent, but just was not as deep or rich as with my Supra/HD600's. The soundstage on the other hand was truly amazing, and I fought with myself everyday whether I wanted to keep them. My system is tuned to a sound that I personally like which is balanced and naturally warm, through my speakers. I think some warmer IC's and the StephanArt extension cable might have done the trick, but on my short schedule I was not able to obtain them. It could also be that I just like the Supra/ardas/HD600 better. Please, no flames for that statement.

Gary,

I really liked how the article went into detail on little things like how the placement of the cans so greatly affected their sound. It's not very common for someone to note that or write about it, but it can make a rather large difference in someone getting them and getting good sound out of them or not. Very well done!

Thanks Doug, I am glad you liked it. Even thought Postive feedback is an audiophile pub, I figure most of the readership is not nearly as well informed about headphones as some (maybe most) of the headfiers. I try hard to remember that someone reading it may never have heard of K1000's.

Thanks again for the encouragement.

Peace from the cornbelt.

Gary
