Close to perfect sound?

Thread Starter
Looking for albums with good music that is recorded very (very very) well.

Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians
BT - This Binary Universe
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (although the bass is a little quiet on this one)
Solar Fields - Movements

Any genre is fine (acoustic would be great), but the kind of recording quality I am looking for is very high at this point (I've been through the good recording thread and liked it).
What have you got, head-fi?

I'm interested in Tubular Bells. Which version is the best?

Grizzly Bear - Vecktamist
My Brightest Diamond - Bring Me The Workhorse
St. Vincent - Marry Me
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Jon Hopkins - Insides
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Postal Service - Postal Service
Sara Groves - Any of her albums

Avoid John Mayer (the compressed the hell out of the poor guy), and even Norah Jones has been compressed just a tad too much.

Dire Straits - Private Investigations

I've always felt that Alice in Chains Unplugged was recorded very well. This is one of my favorite albums to just zone out and listen to with headphones on.

Metallica - Garage Inc. For some reason, their sound is amazing when recording covers. Not so much with original material. Skip "Free Speech", as it is a sonic clunker.

Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' is very nicely done, along with 'Wish You Were Here'.

I agree with Alice In Chain's Unplugged album; it's one of the albums I can keep coming back to and always be impressed.

Eric Clapton's Unplugged album is right up there too. The sound is so real and clean.

It always seems to be listed, but DSOTM really really isn't an audiophile calibre recording quality album. The multitudinous tape loopings and edits and overdubs mash the sound too much. But by GOD is it sweet sweet sweet music.

Best versions of Tubular Bells, imo:

The new 2009 Remaster
The Classic Records 180g LP
Original CD release
Boxed LP Quad mix
Original LP release
2000 HDCD remaster
TB2003 re-recording
Original demo tape

The new 2009 remaster of Tubular Bells really is very very good. Oldfield did it himself and it's well worth buying the large box set if you're an Oldfield fan.

This might be of interest.

Medeski, Martin & Wood (MMW) -
Albums Note Bleu
and
Last dance to Dance Trance (Perhaps) best of (1991-1996)

I recently bought the SACD version of DSOTM and it sounds fantastic on a good set of headphones.

Smashing Pumpkins- Gish

Most stuff from Steely Dan and, as stated above, Donald Fagen.

Rush- Moving Pictures

Since you said any genre, I am going to go in a plug almost every classical album, as very rarely is classical ever compressed. May not be your thing, but you said every...

One that no one has mentioned yet: anything by Dire straits.
I also think that David Bowie recordings are pretty fantastic, though that might be the style of recording rather than the recording itself. I tend to love most recordings from the mid to late 70s era.

Oh yes, how could I forget? Dire straits always sound so amazing. Best cymbals I've ever heard on studio albums.
