verses what?
i might be able to get a little more money for some speakers instead of getting swans m10 or av40s(if my money making plan fails i'm getting the m10s) so i'm thinking of getting the A2s but what is a better speaker for around the same price range of the A2s? if their is any, that can also fit on a dorm sized desk(about 3 1/2 ft long)

if you can spend a little more, the KRK RP5g2 and Mackie MR5 both destroy the A2's in sound quality.. ive heard all 3, albeit not in the same room, but the audioengines dont even compare

When I search both the KRK RP5g2 and the Mackie MR5, they pop up for $150 free shipping.

Audioengines start at $200 when I go searching. So I have no idea where you're finding the A2 speakers for < 150... but do share. I'm still in the process of deciding between them.

Can anyone else attest to the quality of these speakers he's referring to?

The KRK RP5g2 and Mackie MR5 are both sold as a single speaker....so, the $150 bucks you are coming across is only for one monitor. $300 bucks will buy you a pair.

Audioengine A2s run $199 for both speakers.

240 for a pair of krk RP5g2 shipped if you search google shopping
KRK RP5G2 Two Way Active Powered Monitor/ Pair
i wouldn't go higher than that

The A2 doesn't even compare to the A5.

If you end up going with the Audioengines you may want to wait until January. AE has traditionally had 25% off coupon codes during CES and Macworld. There are several 10% off coupons floating around the web too.

The A5s are way too big for my desk even if they were in my price range

You could build these. Better than the A2s for sure, and most likely better than the KRK and Mackies as well.

Its not too hard.

If you don't have access to the tools (router and table saw is it really) you can probably track someone down to build the cabient and route the holes for you. The rest is easy.
