about 500$ to spend for open phones

Thread Starter
Hi.

I would like to make my last buy... and never return
500$ for open dynamic hps (used)
bass something like rs2, sweet like honey
high bass - cello or smthing and mids -vocal range - should be like um... make that "touch the sound"-like feeling. (is it just me or really too few hp's can actually do that?)
highs (cymbals and such) like 325i
probably no grados - some soundstage would be nice. And not the "first row" feeling. The 7nth row perhaps.
I don't want to get into modding.

Should be good for not too hot jazz and older rock music.

Thanks,
m.

I think you might be looking for an AKG K701, although it's probably not going to have quite the bass of the RS2 (I say this from speculation... I've never heard an RS2). Tonality of the K701 in that upper bass/lower mid range is really beautiful, and it has prominent, shimmery highs like a Grado except without being (IMO) as grating. Wonderful match for jazz and older rock (especially acoustic stuff).

That sounds alot like AD1000PRM or AD2000. If you search enough you might get them under $500. They both need an amp to shine though, the improvement is very clear to me from unamp to cheap amp. But even on the Luxman the improvement from a cheap amp to a Luxman in kinda small compare to unamp to amped. A modest SS amp is fine for it.

Ra97oR: whats your non-amp and cheap amp that you're using?

I'm wondering if your ASUS just has better DACs and therefore sounds better.

AKG K701/2, Sony SA5000, or Beyer Daynamic DT880 pro.

Happy listening!

At this level, you're talking a lot about personal preference. You're going to get a lot of contradictory recommendations. You really need to hear before you buy. That said, I'll second the AD2000's. Our tastes are similar. I own RS-1's and HD600's. I prefer the AD2000's. You might want to check out the JVC DX1000. I own a set, and while not for everybody, if you like their signature ( I do), they do killer base and sound stage, yet are at least the equals of the RS-1 in resolution. You also might want to check out the new HE-5 orthos. Very positive "buzz" on these. I just ordered a pair.

It maybe the DAC, but I would say low end SS little dot sound poor with them too.

I played unamp of the iPod Touch and a X-Fi sound card, amp'd on a Luxman P1 and Essence ST. Also the Little Dot and Luxman is run from the same CD player. The Luxman sounds awesome, but the difference doesn't reflect the difference in price. Hope this helps.

The SPL Auditor and the Beyer dt880/600ohm manufaktur is a great match. The high voltage operation of the spl and the high resistance of the beyers create a supremely musical and controlled sound. I tried the dt880/600 with the phonitor and it has been the only solid state amp that I liked for these cans.

Another option you should look at are the ad2000's, the 701/2's wont give you the bass you want, the beyer's will...
