Yeah, AVS forums are a good source, but a lot of their "official XXXX thread" are 100 pages long and a pain to read through.

I would upgrade the speakers before upgrading the AVR also, it will have the most effect on sound.

As far as an AVR, what are using right now. If you have a decent working one (at least 5.1) I would agree with intoflatlines and put the money in new speakers.
