Recommendations? d2000 vs ad1000 vs k701

Hello,

I am in the market for some new phones. I listen to trance, progessive, uplifting, dance, electronic ect. I have had the q-jays in-ears and currently have phonak pfe - enjoyed both of them!

I also make some music myself of the same genres as mentioned above, I use Logic for software. Anyway, I need some new full size headphones and cant decide at all. I was thinking between these Denon d2000, AT-ad1000 or AKG k701 - I know these phones are very far from each other so i ask you Head-fi'ers for help

Do you guys have any recommendations? - or maybe some totally different phones?

Please consider that i live in EU and it is pretty hard for med to come by headphones as easily as in the US - which is also why I hardly cant try the phone before i buy.

My two cents...

Here's my ranking
K701
D2000
AT-AD1000

For making your own music the K701 are better reference phones, but from your tastes which include dance and electronic (bass heavy) the d2000 would be a "funner" phone for listening purposes. Either way you would be getting a great set of cans. So in conclusion I would go with the K701 or D2000

Here are my picks:

1. K701: very good all-around, but perfect for chamber and classical
2. D2000: I've heard the D5000, which is great with bassy tracks, but not the D2000
3. AD1000: these can really rock, with nice definition, but can be a little harsh with instrumental and classical

Thx a lot guys, this really helps!
I knew the K701 are quite bass shy otherwise i would have bought 'em long ago :P Can you tell me the difference between K701 and K702?

Can the AKG K701 be amped to having good bass? - I prefer quality bass over quantity ofc, and i really love having awsome soundstage (look at my prefered IEMs).

Soo, none of these phones are really great at trance and progressie and the like?
Do you have another suggestion on some phones?

Why isn't D2000 great with bassy music? I beg to differ. For bass-heavy stuff I'd forget the K701 right away, since it seriously lacks in the bass department, unlike the Denons. I've owned both and sold the AKGs a while ago just for this reason - K701 just doesn't rock

But I need the phones for music production aswell.

I fear that the D2000 would be too muddy and have an overwhelming bass. Which is not what i like at all - i am no basshead.

There's no sonic difference between K701 and K702, just different color and accessory. K701 with headphone cradle, non detachable cord. K702 without headphone cradle and detachable cord.

If you prefer quality bass over quantity, and great soundstage, K701 should be top on your list. K701 doesn't add extra bass to your track but it isn't bass light.

D2000 is pure crap and I've never heard AD1000.

I don't think that's what he meant. The D2000 doesn't lack in that dept. at all.

701 are my reference cans. There is bass and its the most detailed phone and most musical phone I have heard. The Shure SRH840 also would be a good fit with good bass and nueutral without any grain. Both great cans.

As far as the headphones go, overall it looks like what follows, but, and it's a big but, it's not necessarily in that order for your needs.

1. K701 - The best reference phone out of them, but requires good source/amp to shine, also the most neutral.
2. D2000 - Very fun headphone, the only closed one. Stock cable is cheap but for $80 or something like that Lawton Audio will recable it with the EXCELLENT D5000 cable, and D7000 for like $20 more (D7000 is the same as D5K, just more flexy).
3. AD1000 - If you like the AT sound grab these, but if the AT sound bugs you like it does some (sibilant in upper mids, etc.), skip it.

Now for your type of music, the D2000 are hands down the very best. They are a very fun, bass heavy headphone, and sound great with electronic music. They also have a ton of potential for modding that can make them much better than any of the other headphones (markl mod, Lawton Audio wood cups, D5K/7K recable makes them into top tier sub-$1000 cans).

But for music creation, the K701 are much better with good equipment, although the D2K can do the job.

So it depends on which you would prefer your cans be better for, music or music creation.

Isn't bass pretty much the most important thing when it comes to electronic music...

And the overpowering bass (by the way, not everyone finds it overpowering) can be corrected with the D5K recable and markl mod very easily, for about $200.

For mixing, mastering etc. I wouldn't use headphones primarily anyway (except for reference), a pair of nice monitors give a way better picture of what's going on (stereo image etc.).

I've used D2000s for checking mixes, and they do just fine at that. Just like when mixing with speakers, you have to know what they do, what they sound like. With familiar mid-range equipment one can achieve better results than with unfamiliar hi-end gear.

I could not see myself mixing or mastering songs with K701s, the bass just isn't there, you can't really hear what's going on let's say below 150hz. K701 really is bass-shy, it is not truly a "flat frequency response". A pair of good monitors (Genelec, Adam...) will tell you this right away.

None really...

In terms of sound there is ZERO difference. The K701 is the consumer version and the K702 is the pro version. Sonically they are identical.

The K702 does have a detachable cord, but it's terminated with a 1/8" plug. And the colour....beyond that, there are no differences.
