Am I the only one not feeling the SQ on A818?

Hey!

Ok so I've had my nwz-A818 for quite some time now, more than a year I think.
I'm pretty happy with it, I especially like the UI and love the batterylife.

To be completely honest though I have to say I found the SQ to be somewhat of a letdown coming from my 2nd gen iPod Mini which was surprising to me since I had read rave reviews on the sonys sound quality, also the 2nd gen Mini was said to be one of the worst sounding iPods ever.

I always liked the neutral sound of the Mini and when changing to the Sony I thought it had a pretty artificial sound no matter if I was using EP-630's or PX100's.

Anyone else had any similar experiences when switching from another dap to the A800-series?

Could mine just be a dud?

No offense, but is this a lost post from 2007? Just kidding. You are pretty happy with the A818, but the SQ is a letdown? I just sold mine to a friend and he's happy. I found it to be a nice little DAP, and especially like the Sony EQ system. I think Sony DAPs do have a Sony signature sound, but for MP3 players, it's pretty good. Guess you never should have listened to the Mini. When I moved from the Zune to the 818, I knew it would be different, but both sounded good to me.

Hehe yes the timing for my post can seem a bit off, I was just surfing amazon for sony mp3 players. Do the later series from Sony have the same sound signature as the A800's?
I understand I might be the only one on this forum who prefers the sound of a 2nd gen Mini to a A818

I haven't owned another Sony except for the X-1061, and that is pretty much head and shoulders over the 818. But I do believe that many Sony owners do like their DAPs (later versions than the 818). There have been alot since then. You might want to post in this forum asking Sony owners for recommendations beyond the 818. The X is $290, which is way more than the standard Walkman MP3 players. THe newest E Series DAPs have good sound, I believe, and are like $89 for 16GB on Amazon. Yesterday, a bunch of etailers and online stores like Walmart and Toys R Us (I kid you not) had the E3xx 16GB for like $67. But that deal is gone.

I liked the Sony once I changed a few hidden settings and used its excellent EQ. I got tired of the hiss on certain headphones, gave it to my sister, and bought a flash Zune.

yeah, the hiss of that unit was very bad. Its EQ was passable, I would not call it great. Among portables, it is one of the better ones, but not quite as intuitive as the pretty decent Meizu 8 band EQ.
