FLAC or 320Kbps for your portable rig with amp?

Hi guys,

For those of you that have a nice portable rig with portable amps, what kind of format do you use? I currently have the UM3X and the UE10 and I am wondering how I should re-rip my whole collection? Should I just go for FLAC or 320kbps.

The thing is, I wonder if the difference amongst FLAC, WAV, 320kbps is there for most of your ears? To my ears, I think the 320kbps is quite good for well recorded albums but FLAC still has an edge. I am not sure if it's placebo though

I honestly can't hear the difference so I don't bother with flac unless its for archiving purposes. I usually use v2 to v0 vbr mp3 because it sounds good enough and it saves space.

IF your ripping your entire collection you might as well go for flac. Even if you can't tell the difference it's nice to have your entire collection in flac. If you do rip everything in 320 maybe in a year or two you'll be able to tell the difference and you'll have to re-rip everything to flac. I always rip in flac just in case

Ok,... so I guess some people can really tell the difference huh?! I always prize myself for having good ears as I have been playing music for so many years, but sometimes,.. I think it's my ego talking. Anyways... goood responses! Keep them coming please: )

this is what would recommend. im sure that one day the flacs themselves could be used and we can all get rid of lossy

Unless you have an 80GB+ hard drive player, I think the choice is pretty obvious if you have a decent collection of music.

True! But I think some people are willing to sacrifice part of their collection for SQ? I think many heafier just might do that: p

What bugged me with using lossless portable was that I always had to decide beforehand what I might want to listen to during a trip rather than having the whole collection and then deciding at the time I wanted to listen. Even with 320 aac and a 160 GB Classic I'm approaching that limit again and I'm no finished ripping all my cd's.

.ogg encoded with aotuv beta 5 (q5 or 6, generally 5).
~166kbps and its pretty much transparent.

I store everything in flac but for portable use I use vorbis q6.

i hear the diffrence between losless and MP3 320 , and to my ear it's huge . but you see that a lot of fox don't . so do your self a favor and try it for yourself , put the same songs in wav/flac in your dap , and the same songs in mp3 , and put them in the same playlist , and see if you hear a diffrence .

for archiving pourpuse i would rip to flac , so if in any time in the futor you will hear diffrence , you will not have to rip again

Thanx guys! They are all very nice ideas!! I think trusting our ears are the best option. I also think it depends on the quality of the recording itself. Some of my older Art Tatum are really not worthy of FLAC.
