I tunes- what is peoples beef with it?

Thread Starter
I have used i tunes and an Ipod for years with no problems, nearly all my music is ripped from original CD,s.

Most of the bashing I hear about I tunes is usually factually incorect. It will be interesting to put this to a wider audience.

I cannot for the life of me see why Itunes stops people buying an Ipod.

I think I've got to be one of the more tolerant head-fiers because I have no problem with itunes whatsoever, In fact I like the way it organizes myaudio files. I can easily download podcasts, get educational stuff from itunes U, get apps for my itouch and get recommendations using genius. I personally don'treally see why it's bashed that much around here. I do use foobar2000 from time to time but..................

Because I don't want to use any sync software. If the next DAP doesn't support Rockbox, I'd do without.

I use it, love it, update it when available and handle almost 2TB of media on it. I agree, people spend so much energy trying to hate it or finding something better. Now if you are on a PC, than it may be different and obviously if you do not use iPods than use something else.

If you are a mac/ ipod user than I have found nothing better. As far as syncing I love it. I make a playlist labeled iPhone 3Gs and whenever I find something I want on my DAP I just put it in the playlist. Next time I sync it is on there. Too easy.

I hate it for using too much of my computer's system resources.
And syncing using it really sucks, I prefer drag&drop.

Maybe you need a better PC, iTunes doesn't bother 8GBs of ram and a quad core

iTunes is completely painless and works fine on my MacBook (2.0GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM) and I don't see any reason to go with another player. When I (finally) get around to building a music server, I'll probably run lossless off iTunes.

I don't mind using it to sync songs to my ipod, but for playing music and ripping CDs, there is far better software out there.

I use to hated because it was bloated and slow on my older laptop, but now I like it because I have a better pc now. I only use it for syncing my ipod, when I listen to music on my pc I use Foobar and to rip music I use EAC.

Because it's slow, inefficient, and sucks. Because it lags for twenty minutes when I highlight 100GB of songs to transfer to my iPod, and neither Windows Explorer (drag and drop) or the Zune software do.

Quite a big user base so if some issue occurs it's much easier to find a solution. Pleasing to an eye UI. Possibility to install without bloat using stripped installers. Painless syncing with Ipod (duh...). Can't be bothered to maintain my library myself, itunes does all rearranging and renaming automatically WITHOUT any configuration required. Great compatibility with Squeeze Center.

And yes, I'm using PC. It works much better on a Mac though, that's a no brainer. However latest Zune Software (4.0 afaik) is quite an awesome piece of software. In terms of speed it's definitely better than Itunes on PC.

- Uses higher resources than a media player should. Granted, not as much of an issue on newer hardware. But a issue on a netbook, for example.

- Anemic codec support. Only plays OGG Vorbis / FLAC with an addon, and no support for WMA, tmk.

- Touches my music files, even when I ask it not to. I don't know if this is an issue with v9, but it definitely was with v7.

- Requires QuickTime.

- (EDIT: Forgot about this one) Can't add Album Art within an iTunes account. I guess they forgot that not everyone has a credit card.

- Not the best solution for ripping CD's (as others have mentioned). EAC or RubyRipper, depending on your OS.

It's not a terrible piece of software, but I am definitely not the market they are shooting for - I prefer a media player that is light, supports a number of codecs, and a music player that can do drag and drop.

its garbage on windows

Works perfectly for me. Only downside I can see is that I have recorded everything Apple lossless so I will have to re record if I change to a non Apple player.

Tried it with my iPhone 2G and didn't like it at all. It wouldn't let me add album art unless I had an iTunes account. There's probably a way around that, but it's unnecessary, IMO. That, and I didn't want to have to convert my OGG collection to MP3. If I used the Apple firmware and iTunes store, I'd probably learn to live with it, but screw that when there's Rockbox.

I can see how people like it, but it's not right for me. But I'm biased against sync software in general...
