Stuck between HD595 and D2000

So, I've been thinking of getting a pair of head phones. I've narrowed my search down to these two, because they seem to be both great headphones. I need a pair that will last me for a few years, because I plan on using my investment well. I usually listen to electronic and rock. Is there any noticeable difference between the two without an amp? I don't want to make the head phones into a money pit and add expensive stuff such as amps and new pads, just something that will sound well. Also, would a cheap Fiio E5 help these any?

Sound signatures are completely different. The HD595 is more balanced, while the D2000 is more bass heavy and "fun".

It's up to you which you'd prefer, both are very good headphones but I'd prefer the D2000.

definitely get the D2000 IMO. if you listen to electronic, you will looooove the denons deep and punchy bass impact. you also don't need an expensive amp for them, even a nice portable will do the job, but be aware that you DO need an amp for them, this is even not a quastion and the more high quality the amp is, the better they will sound.
I have very much appreciation for the HD595 because they were my first full size headphones (I also own the HD650 NOW) and I think they sound great for their price, but i must say that IMO the denons are of a different league...higher ofcourse.
GOOD LUCK!

Then get HD595. They sound good unamped as long as you have a decent soundcard. Not the case for D2000. And no Fiio E5 wouldn't do any good. If anything it'll make the hiss louder.

I'm not sure how similar the 595's are to the 555's but my friend has a pair that I've listened to and I own the D2000's. Overall I think that the D2000 is the better of the 2 particularly for electronic music(80% of what I listen to is electronic the rest is metal). One thing you should certainly consider though is whether you're willing to purchase an amp or not. When I listened to my friend's 555's they sounded great unamped but even though the D2k's have a low impedance I feel that you haven't truly heard them until you've amped them. Fortunately though it doesn't take a super expensive amp to make the D2k's sound great.

What amp(s) would you recommend? I've looked up a few recommended by other members, but they are all too high end for me(money wise).

People have reported good synergistic results with using a Nuforce Icon Mobile ($99), but I'm sure you can find an even cheaper amp that may work or you can buy used.

yeah...the denons just need a little push, a little more than a portable can give. but again..with high end amp they will sound high-end!

The only amp I've ever had is the zero dac/amp and that has worked pretty well for me. You can find them on ebay for anywhere between $100 to $150.

There is a ton of info on the zero here and here.

i was also just stuck in between a few different options for some new headphones. However I did decide on the Denon D2k's, they're replacing my HD555's that blew out. Now from the research i've been doing, the D2k's have fairly recessed mids, i've also been reading that adding an amp will help bring that out as will new cable and markl mod (i plan on having mine modded by lawton to the la2000 lite or making a diy blue dragon cable). And as for my question, I was considering the Cute Beyond Headphone amp to start out with. But what I was wondering is how do you guys think that a denon reciever would run these cans? I was considering the reciever, because I would like to get some nicer (possibly klipsch?) speakers down the road, and it'd be nice to have the reciever for that as well. Also I figure I could always throw a headphone amp into the mix of it down the road anyway right?

I have owned both cans for a couple years. I actually just sold me 595s. They just never came out of the drawer anymore.

The 595s are much easier to drive out of a portable. They are more detailed imo. They have a nice wide soundstage and do sound very good. But ultimately for me they fell into the boring category when listened to side by side with the D2000s. The 595s really lack in a full base. The base is really detailed and nice to listen to, but if you're into rock they will probably not wow you. The 2000s have a really open/wide sound for a closed headphone. The bass in the Denons is really great.

The only drawback with the Denons in this comparison is they are harder to drive. They have an impedance of 32 ohms, but they really don't seem that efficient. But they are efficient enough if you kick up the volume a little. You will get some very nice detail. They are actaully great headphones in this price range.

I've heard a lot of good things about stereo receivers being able to power the D2000s quite well. The fact that it's a Denon receiver should be a plus as well. If I have time tomorrow (which I think I will), I'll do a quick comparison of my roommate's Onkyo receiver vs. my Little Dot I+ amp.

I did a comparison between the HD595 and the D5000 (which is quite close to the D2000) a while back, you can take a look at the review in my link, it might help you to decide.

For rock, I think I would go for the Denon, it has more bass and liveliness that goes well for that genre. The 595 is quite good in that it is non-fatiguing and the bass does tighten up a bit with amplification, its light on the head and great for long listening sessions. I think the Denon would thrill you more, whereas the 595 is more a relaxed listen.

^thanks man that'd be awesome to see how that goes

I have had both and perfer the D2000 over the 595's. They do better amped. I have mine hooked to a mini3 and am very happy with the set up. The only thing I don't like about the D2000 is the cable, it is very stiff. But a recable job will take care of that.
