No-nonsense MP3 player with on-the-go playlist?

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for a mp3 player that must be at least 32gb and must have a "on-the-go" playlist function that allows you to edit playlist(s) on the device. I've lurked and read a lot of reviews but many of them are ambiguous with regards to the latter function that I mention. Being able to control the player in the dark in my pocket is also very important. I don't care about touch-screen, video playback, radio etc. Of course, sound quality that is comparable to cowon u3 or sony walkman (the two I own right now) would be nice.

Do all cowon devices have the on-the-go playlist feature? i9 seems good but is only 16gb max. Somehow I just don't like the d2 as I'm skeptical of its user interface and and its thickness. I'm not too big on the sansa players either (battery life isn't too good?)

I think i'm too picky, but anyone with more experience has other suggestion? TIA

Both the iPod Touch and the 32 gig Zune HD can create on the go playlists. I have both but I find it slightly more straightforward on the Zune HD.

The cowon s9 DOES NOT DO ON THE GO PLAYLIST.   You can start with one thing say a playlist or an album.  After that you are only able to add ONE SONG AT A TIME PERIOD.   You can't combine 2 playlists or 2 artist .... it's absolutely DREADFUL.  The Cowon S9 was a big disappointment because of this and I wish I could get half my money back for the damn thing.

Did you happen to find a 32GB that offers an on the go playlist? Creative Zen players used to have this function and it was my favorite function and is not vital! Their new X-FI3 is garbage and doesn't offer the feature anymore, not sure why.  It sounds like the 32GB Zune offers this but it's pricey.

Thanks!

AW: No-nonsense MP3 player with on-the-go playlist?

What about a rockboxed ipod?

well the sansa clip zip OF has exactly that on-the-go playlist, but rockbox does it is better ... and yes coming from cowon players, sansas has a subpar battery life, mine lasts 12 hours max (rockboxd and running flac)

I like my Clip Zip. Its on the go playlist is easy. It'll take an SD card up to 32 gigs. It's about as no nonsense as you can get. It doesn't do video, show pics or cook breakfast. It does show album art. Other than that it just plays music and sounds great doing it. If album art is nonsense, then get the Clip +. It doesn't show album art, it just has great sound and also on the go playlist. They're both cheap so use the money you save on good headphones and music to fill that 32 gig SD card.

I agree with the post above ... just one minor correction though.

You can actually add up to a 64GB SD card - a SDXC can be formatted to FAT32 and will work.
