help me pick my all around (gym, commute, etc) rig

so first, all my music is in apple lossless. i don't have anything again flac, its just that ALAC makes everything move smoothly with iTunes. for home, and possibly work, im going to be using my MBP apogee duet to grado HF2s. now im missing my second gen shuffle for the gym. i sold it because the sound sucked, and i sold my westone um1's because the sound sucked. sold my PFEs because they broke, even though the sound was a lot better. bought ADDIEMs because they were 25usd shipped.

what i'm looking for is one portable DAC to do everything. I don't want to have multiple devices just because i like keeping my life simple. i have a palm pre, but am not satisfied with the sound.

so now i'm thinking either go with the newest shuffle for 30usd to be able to play all my ALAC without the hassle of converting. I could also take advantage of the ADDIEM controls. or start working out with a 3rd gen ipod nano which is similarly cheap and similarly can play ALAC, and has the advantage of 1 using upgraded IEMs like the westone 2s i'm eyeing. and i could go with a LOD and amp in the future. or go with a sansa clip, and have to convert my files or keep two copies.

so what do you guys think:
1 get the newest shuffle call it a day and save the real critical listening for my non portable rig
2 get the ipod nano and sacrifice size, but have the ability to have a good workout DAP plus a good portable rig with LOD and amp and upgraded headphones
3 get the sansa with the possibility of upgrading IEM but probably never amp it because there is no LO. and deal with the conversion of ALL my files or keeping doubles.

Sadly, the newest shuffle can only accept the iBuds which come bundled with the player--and no other headphones or IEMs at all (at present). This is because the newest Shuffle requires the remote that's permanently hard-wired to the iBuds in order for the even the most basic of functions to even operate at all (there are no controls, not even a Play or Power On/Off button, on the unit itself). Upgrading to a better set of headphones or IEMs would have eliminated the required remote, thereby rendering the newest Shuffle completely unusable. Apple and licensed third-party companies might be working on a remote adapter which would allow the use of better 'phones than the iBuds with the Shuffle.

Never mind: I saw your post which implied what I said.

How much music do you wish to carry with you? I like to carry a lot so I use a 160 Gb iPod Classic. Without an amp I am partial to the Etymotic ER4P sound, and Yuin OK2. I am receiving an IEM from Fang of Head Direct by Friday (12/4). Shoot me an email in about a week and I can tell you how it sounds. Good luck.
