Black Star - Blackstar (An essential in hip-hop. A critically acclaimed release by Mos Def and Talib Kweli. As a matter of fact, get some Mos Def and Talib as well)
Nas - Illmatic (Like this needs any introduction)
People Under the Stairs - O.S.T
Saul Williams - Amethyst Rock Star (Pretty intense record performed in a Spoken Wordish way)
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory (Another essential in the sub-genre of jazzhop.)
The Problemaddicts - The Dark Side of Oz (If you're a Pink Flyod fan, you would find this rather pleasing)
Arts the Beatdoctor - Transitions (Leaning towards a larger emphasis on the instrumentals)
Nujabes - Modal Soul (Same as above, but a lot better)
Hocus Pocus - 73 Touches (French hip-hop. Really beautiful stuff . Not to mention it is produced by C2C who won the DMC (World DJ Championships) 3 times in a row )
Shad - The Old Prince (Calming, intelligent hip-hop)
Eminem - Infinite (Eminem's debut album. Excellent flows and sure as hell beats the hell out of anything else he released)
Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (Cause it is that ****ing awesome)
Prolific - Think (This, my friend, is intense hip-hop. Excellent flows and beats and never fails to draw me in with dark atmosphere)
Good list, but I'd like to add a few other essentials:

KRS-One
Aesop Rock
Immortal Technique

Pick any album, they're all good.

What came immediately to mind is the album Nomad by Paul Sauvanet -- a set of ethnic/electronic/orchestral tone poems played by an electronically emulated, but very life-like, orchestra. The piece Madurai Temple is beautiful beyond words.

Infected Mushroom and Shpongle are probably some of the best trance I've ever heard and really shine with lossless files on a good system.

Try listening to Portugal the Man, I recommend their newest album The Satanic Satanist. Their other albums Censored Colors, and Waiter, you Vultures are fantastic as well.

Wow! I am simply stunned. This is an ample amount of recommendations. I've spent the last few days combing through YouTube and local music stores looking at all the recommendations... And I'm still only halfway through page 1 of this thread.

I'm absolutely floored by a large number of these artists. A ton of the recommendations I've gone through (probably 65%) have been impeccable. All I can think of to say is thank you all for opening me up to a realm of music, that to this point I didn't know existed. So many of these artists are better than a lot of more "mainstream" artists, yet I've never heard of them before!
