help with loud video card

post #1 of 9

first of all, happy thanksgiving everyone!

also i know i posted a similar post but the problem seems to not be the fan. so for a while now my video card has been making a lot of noise especially around the time i boot it up. when i finally realized that it was the video card, i googled it and many responses were that the fan was probably dusty or needs to be oiled. today i dusted the hell out of it and when i rebooted my computer, it was still very LOUD. i have also noticed that when i tap the video card, it usually stops immediately and runs really quiet. but the fan is still spinning. what could be the problem? my video card is an EVGA Geforce 9500GT 512mb. i run windows 7. i've downloaded the latest drivers from nvidia. mmmm, can't think of anything else to add, but if there's something else i can add that'd help please let me know. and thanks in advance!

ok now time to feast

Look into RivaTuner it can control your fan speed. I have a ATi HD4870 which is very loud at full speed. I turn it down to 25% for regular use and to 50% during gaming. There are plenty of How To's on this all over google.

Not sure what made the noise you're hearing unless I see it.
Few people told me that it could be the choke coil, especially when it is high pitched tome like mosquito. Touch it with your finger and see if the noise is weakening. If that is it, applying a drop of super glue on it usually fixes it.

its not a high pitch sound. its more a really loud whirring...has the same pitch as like a weedwacker. when i flick the card, it usually stops. but like i said the fan is still spinning as it was before when it was making the sound.

It depends on the noise, if it is loud, irregular and/or grinding, then it might be that the fan is dying. To me the tapping you have to do is a sign of premature failure, unless something software related is happening during bootup but I'm not sure what that would be.

In terms of failure, there isn't really much you can do as it's a video card, normally I would suggest a drop of sewing machine oil but I'm not sure if you'll be able to apply it to the bearing unless you take the entire assembly off, and perhaps not even that will allow you to.

I think the best option would be to just RMA it, although attaching a new fan with zip ties while disconnecting the GPU fan might do the job as well.

by RMA do you mean return it, or does that also stand for something else that i'm not aware of

RMA = Return Merchandise Authorization

Put your finger on the fan and slow it down a bit. If the noise goes away it is the fan. Most likely it is a ball bearing fan and when the bearings are failing they start to get very noisy.

How long have you been using the card? It could be that it is just noisy, video cards are notorious for that. I run 2x 8800 GTS 512's and they run at full speed when I start up but settle down once XP starts booting. It is quite loud for a little while.

Yep. To RMA means to return the card to the manufacturer who will either repair the fan or send you a new card. Also I'm assuming that since your card is a newer 9500GT that your warranty is still in effect.
