I think they're appalling. The bass is overly colored and prominent, extremely muddy and just gets in the way. The highs are way rolled off. To each his own I suppose.

I inherited a Wave radio.

It sucks.

I will admit to liking the way it looks.

Same thing happened with my on-ears. Right after I buy them they change the cord that is near the headphones. I can not win. What will they change next? They are trying to make stuff better!

Their mid IEMs have a nice ear feel. My RE0s are better sounding though.
I am pretty sure that the picture krmathis posted is the previous version of the Bose IEs. In the 2nd version they moved the chip up a bit instead of right next to the jack and the carrying case is much bigger.

Makes sense, because otherwise it wouldn't be compatible with the 1st generation of iPhones.

Well, based on the limited information Bose puts out about the 161, I would say response to 100 Hz is wishful thinking and even more so with standard listening volumes and average room sizes. Bose is notorious for not publishing any frequency response information so everything is a guess unless you actually measure the response of the speakers yourself. But with only 2 2.5" drivers in the 161, any output at 100 Hz would be subpar. Now add in your attempt to use a sub woofer. To bridge the gap where the sub integrates with the 161s, you would have to have the sub operate at 100+ Hz. Not only is this non-ideal for subwoofer drivers in terms of linear operation, but you now have the issue of bass localization. The typical rule of thumb is to crossover the sub and mains at 80 Hz as the highest frequency point to prevent localization.

The only thing I have to say is if you are dead set on using the 161s is to just try it and see how you like the results. For me, I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist. I can't afford to have the absolute best, but I do pick and choose so I can get close with a budget I set.

Seems like you are right.
My pair looks like the one in the picture I posted, but when looking at the BOSE website the current in-ear looks a bit different. With a bump on the cable some 15cm from the plug, a larger carrying case and a lanyard.

OH so my pair are newer, OK. Well I have to state the On Ears had a short where the cord goes in. This was out of warranty so I go in and do the $75.00 exchange where they give you a new pair. This is ruff as I like Bose but to spend $160.00 and then $80.00 with tax for a silly pair of on ears?? I now hold them like a first born and never leave the house with them.

Upon inspection I noted that they changed the cord near the headphone to make it more thick. Bose sound fun but now I think I will try not to be part of the conspiracy against my wallet. Head-Fi is bad enough.

Thus another classic example of the ongoing Bose love/hate phenomena.

I fixed my parent's 321 system the other night and taking it apart solidified my opinion.

Never mind the sound, the claims or the market, it is just straight up lazy engineering. I can hardly believe what they ask for this system. Not worth $1k, not worth $250.

Amplifier: stereo IC with a big heat sink, that's literally it.

DVD drive: OEM Toshiba 5.25" drive with a different faceplate. Not held in with screws either, held in with a piece of metal that goes over it.

Enclosure: plastic that feels really cheap, all held together rather badly with just locking tabs. Creaks a lot.

I tried to keep it short but I really needed to get that out of my system.

Well...

I too need to get some steam out of my system.

To OP, Zx10guy summed it up - If you are trying to work with your Bose products, you'll have many challenges. All of the above mentioned weaknesses of bose products add up to a disaster when trying to upgrade them. All their products work best when used with their original equipment.

My suggestion is to sell the 161 / and center channel on craigslist and then do some research and get some decent speakers [even budget, entry level speakers will do a better job than the 161's imo - as they will probably not even extend up to 150hz even at +-10db]. The Accousitmass bass module will be a waste of money / space --as you will never get desirable Bass frequencies. None of their products have a natural flat response. Try to use their speakers with your own amp - and you'll get surges in certain frequencies "the size of Mount Everest" / dips in certain frequencies as deep as "the Grand Canyon".

I have had a few Bose products... some are OK [especially when I was not a sound enthusiast, I was happy with them] and currently leasing a car with the factory Bose system in it: 2007-Infiniti G35s: comes stock with the "Infiniti/Bose Studio on Wheels" system.
It is designed as a 2.1- stereo system - which has 24bit DAC, and a designed front soundstage. At first listen, it sounds OK- pleased with it- then after a while, I noticed sound depth, clarity, stereo imaging is very lacking!!! I tried everything to fix [mainly the clarity] ---but MUD is all I'm getting. ---I'm returning the car after lease is over--- and this muddy Bose system is one of the reasons to why. LOL-I'm actually using my headphones in the car- cuz I can't stand it's lack of Sq.

Anyways, end rant, ____________L

ps. I know that sound imaging is difficult to achieve in a car... but I've listened to Harman Kardon Logic 7 and Acura ELS stystems --- and they blow my system out of the water for Sq and imaging!!! BLEH-to-Bose!

Hahaha, iv got the Bose system in my Avalance. Same thing just boom boom boom, gets very fatiguing on your ears hurts after a while. One note bass, mediocre mids and high end meh.

And as for upgrading with Bose, haha. What kind of system runs just from the sub anyways. I hate all HTIB, any all in one system, and sets with proprietary connections.

Uh, my RX8 came with Bose Factory system...it's absolutely horrific. I can't recognize some songs because it can't handle the complexities. I'll play it, wonder what it is, check the CD then listen again at home and my ears go THERE WE GO! and brains like AHA!

Parents have a Lifestyle IV system, everytime I listen to it I swear something is missing. Much rather listen to my 'phones

Yah, actually, I'm still very angry at Infiniti for going with Bose. I know the margins are larger etc... but freekin hell - there's no option.

Bose has lost many automotive accounts - eg: Audi is now with Bang&Olufsen, Bmw is now HK-logic7, Acura is now Panasonic-ELS, etc.
Lexus never used Bose,

Mazda, Infiniti, Chevy-Cadillac-saab-saturn still uses Bose... + may be missing a few... ... not many luxury high end anymore.
the list is shorter!!!
Indicative of the fact that PPL are catching on to LOW Sq and what I'd call "Muddy Sound".

I'm Glad the industry is changing... as the end customers get more educated on what is good-decent SQ. This will in turn change Bose's quality?? HOPE SO!
