Good bang for buck portable?

I am getting an Ed 8 and it could be interesting to try it for portable use.

I don“t no anything about portable gear but I really need bang for buck since I am going to use my home setup 95 % of the time anyway. ED 8 is supposed to perform well unamped so not sure if I even need such a thing maybe just a good source?. Is the lineout from portables or such similar in strength as from soundcards like the Essence and Elite Pro... I suspect their signal is quite a bit stronger even on the line outs but.

file formats 320 kb mp3s at least. FLAC would be extremely nice as well.

Price? The Sansa clip has gotten great reviews, you can get it for less than 50$ as well.
Maybe one of the iAudio Cowon (korean)? Meizu M6 SL (chinese)? Google em and read some reviews.

There is a Graham Slee amp in your sig, you are buying one of the most expensive cans on the market and you want to know if you can go cheap on a portable source ? Its been a long day - I must be missing something in this thread.

"Good bang" is subjective so a dollar budget would be helpful. Ultrasones seem to have good synergy with the S9. One gentleman is enjoying the Ed9 with the S9. I listened to the HFI-780 and they work well for EDM. S9 is running for $170 (8GB) to $260 (32GB) on Amazon US. It also comes with FLAC support.

Thanks will look into those. As for budget okay say sub 200$ 8 gb is more then enough. I have always been a 100 % home listener. Edition 8 I am testing out for home use more then portable use.

Though it might be practical to have some digital out on the amps do most portable stuff support bit perfect playback? Neither my PS 3 or computer is 100 % dead silent so a portable source with superb spdif should come in handy.

The notion of using the ED8 as a portable sounds a bit crazy to me hahaha. Have you seen these in person? They're quite something to behold IMO

A portable source with 'superb SPDIF' for reasonable money ? I suspect that you have just described the Holy Grail of portable audio. I have one of the few small form-factor DAC/amps with SPDIF-in and it cost more than I'd be willing to pay for a battery-powered unit. The D10, at 275USD plus postage, would be your best bet for a DAC that accepts optical input, but you will need to spend more on the opamp upgrade to get it to a standard where you would be happy with it as the engine for the Edition 8, and many of the D10 faithful seem to be moving to the Rx atm.
