Windows 7 dwn.exe problem :/ - Page 2

Your laptop probably has a service manual floating around the internet somewhere. It should show how everything comes apart so that you don't have to guess.

This will disable an antiquated part of Windows networking that has caused me CPU spikes on two separate machines running Windows 7 x64. I tracked it down with a kernel debugger and I found that the machines were occasionally getting stuck in a semi-infinite loop of LMHOSTS lookups.

Hope this helps!

Edit: Windows 7 doesn't even have an LMHOSTS file configured by default so this change won't affect anything but your CPU spikes. The OS attempts to open a file that isn't even there millions of times and persists when the file is created.
so far so good, i cant quite believe it, i dunno if it was this ^ but havent had any spikes since..

im mega impressed, thanks i asked this on 2 PC forums, and this is the one which [seems to have] worked

I was getting random lock-ups whenever I switched windows, regardless of how many programs i was running (would happen between two explorer windows ffs!), or how long that machine had been switched on.

This high CPU load was also causing my laptop to run REALLY warm.

Again, I cant quite believe of all the PC forums I frequent, it was solved on here! Oh well, atleast this place is good for something other than spending all my hard earned £ on things no one else can appreciate, or thinks is crazy!

Huh? How does a bug like that even get past the fricking beta testing?

Yeah, but the "official" beta test phase is over, and that kind of bug STILL persists? This is the first time I have heard Win7 this bug.
