Singlepower Frustration - Please help or buy it from me

Since nobody was really interested in my for sale Singlepower PPX3 Slam unless they could see the inside, I tried to open it up. Ended up having to drill out the fourth bottom screw, but I still can't crack this thing open, it's like fort knox. Can someone give me specific instructions on how to open this thing up?

As I'm pretty frustrated at this point, another option is to just make me an offer to buy it as-is. It now has scratches on the bottom by the fourth screw hole, and part of a screw rattling around on the inside.

Original for sale ad (before I tried to open it) is here: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f42/fs...mp-out-448716/

The case fits together very snugly.

If all 4 screws in the bottom edge of the face and back panel are out, GENTLY pry it apart with a screwdriver or something. I like to put the amp upside down, and just slip the screwdriver between the bottom and the face, and the back panel. It dosnt actually take much effort at all, just a little help to get things free. Once you get the 2 halves moving they should come apart pretty smoothly.

On that note, dont touch ANYTHING inside until you have verified that the voltages have dropped to safe levels! various caps in the amp are known for holding voltage for at least weeks if not forever.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

How do the front screws come out? I just see 2 things with tiny round holes in the middle. If those are screws, I have no idea what to unscrew them with.

Given what has been posted here about Singlepower, I think you are well and truly screwed.

Those are probably 1/16" hex screws like Mikhail used on most of his amps.

They are hex head screws. I've gone thru 3 of the best hardened snapon bits
already getting these things loose. And if you have stipped them out, then you
have to drill them out. Once you drill it out, you can snap the bottom off with
a flat blade screwdriver from the side.

If its really a slam and has the black gate output caps, these things can store
a significant charge for months, possibly longer. So make sure that when you do
crack it open you discharge those things if you are going to mess with it.

Most but not all extremes have resistors on both sides of the output caps to
ground, so this warning does not apply to them.

Matt. I had to drill out the screws on my ES-1 amp as well.. and once drilled out, I had to pry the upper and lower halves apart. Pretty easy to replace screws from local hardware shop... (you don't have to use hex - I didn't)

Good luck and be careful..

Cheers,

What's the best way to discharge the caps?
Matt, take this thing into a stereo repair shop to do this stuff. What you're getting into is not for the novice.

Sorry to hear of your problem Matt, when these amps work right they sound fantastic. However as we have found out the maker cut corners, lied and who knows what else. Sure hope you can get it opened up and that it has the correct transformer. Good luck.

If you can't answer that question yourself you should not be fiddling around. Although you have to start somewhere, jumping in head first is not wise.

Understood, thanks for the advice. I won't mess with it.
