How viable would it be to connect both; E1 & E5 together? Former serving as a DOC/LOD, while latter being the amp? Or would that be an atter nonsense?

That's called double amping and it is what most of us trying to avoid as much as possible, cause it usually degrade the SQ instead of improving it.

Shameless bump to ask Iphone users how much the E1 taxes your battery life?

" E1 is powered by the power output from the dock of iPod/iPhone, at the one hand , if you need more power to drive the earphone, it will decrease the play time of iPod/iPhone, but at the other hand, because the amp build inside the iPod/iPhone will not output any energy, so it will not affect so much."
