Impressions of the Ortofon e-Q7 versus the IE8, CK100, SE530, FX500 and X10 (plus CK10 discussion from post #120)

I am sure my taste has changed since a year ago when I heard the PFE, but I would love to hear them again, especially amped with a good amp.

And speaking of amps, I have the CK10 in right now and I just turned on the bass boost on my Arrow 12HE amp because I can

and think the high setting (+12dB) is nice for trance but too much for pop, but the low setting works well for that (+6dB). Although I don't see myself using that setting much as I still find them perfectly acceptable to my ears without the boost. But I guess I have it, why not use it (when I remember)?

Like I said the PFEs were an unexpected surprise for me, I didn't expect a linear IEM to sound so appealing to me. Theyr'e fast and precise and respond well to EQing if I want a bit more bass presence. And TBO they are a lot less fatiguing than the CK10 to my ears.

Concerning the Arrow amp I'm quite interested in this one. Its slim profile would fit nicely with my Cowon i9. Moreover they have an upgrade discount of -40 euros and told me they'd even accept a Fiio amp in return. I know it's OT but would you mind saying a few words about synergy with your phones?

I thought the PFE was great when I had it, but not better than the IE8. And while I am not in a big rush to get it again, I wouldn't mind having the PFE again. I just don't know how much use it would get, hence my reservation.

Two of my posts on the Arrow (12HE) can be found here and here.

I have tried more since then, and it seems to have good synergy with everything I have thrown at it, IE8, CK10, CK90Pro, Copper, RE252, WM2. Just now I compared the Arrow to the Shadow with the IE8 and the Arrow seems clearer and seems to control the bass a little better. I think the Arrow is a little warmer than the Shadow.

Please don't laugh at my first attempt of writing a review...

We have the same join-month, but you are 26 days earlier and now, you are a Headphoneus Supremus!

I saw that after I posted (and did edit my post). So, in 26 days and with a few more posts you will be there...

And your review is great, I like it!

Glad you like my unmatured review!

Send them to you? I wonder how much will it cost from Japan to California...
So, I think it is faster and better to ask James, joker, ClieOS, kjk to get a pair of these and write a better review!

EMS is very cheap in japan, about $10.
On another note,so ck10 doesn't benefit from a portable amp Joe?and from reading your arrow impressions,it is a warm amp so it is definatly a no no with the ie8.I am interested in the pico slim and I am not impressed by the arrow's design and it is a little wide for being portable.

^ Thanks for the information! I have checked the EMS delivery rates, for under 300g it is 1200yen or 13 dollars.

Unless I have other toy to distract my attention, I am reluctant to take them off my ears now! @average_joe, if you wish I can sent them to you maybe earlier of April, after I come back from my vacation in Hokkaido

The Shadow seems very neutral, so the Arrow is not really all that warm, just a hair more than the Shadow, but noticeable to me. And with my 5.5g -> Arrow the space the IE8 creates is amazing. I put the Copper in and it just couldn't compete.

OK, so, yes the CK10 benefits from an amp, but not like my other IEMs. The CK10 to me sounds better from what I consider a poor sounding source such as the Fuze HPO (and Clip/Clip+), my laptop HPO, 5.5g HPO, etc. I could go ampless with the CK10 and not miss a beat. The bass does have a little more authority with the Arrow, for example (but it is still the CK10). I am getting the Slim also. Why not?

As far as size, it fits perfect with my iPhone (except it has interference caused by the phone) and my 5.5g. It is a little big for my Fuze, but not all that bad because it is so thin.

Thanks for the kind offer even though I was joking

Not that I would pass up hearing something, but if you don't think they compete with the CK10 or IE8, than that is good enough for me! Maybe joker would be a better review candidate, I am becoming a snob!

Glad my snobbery could help you to learn a new word!

And I forgot to mention, I am falling for the IE8 again...

I should get the Arrow as well for a review. If I get it, you're more than welcome to give it a spin.

Just returning to the question of what constitutes a top-tier IEM for a moment, that would have been easy to answer when I joined Head-Fi. It was triple-armature and between $400.00 and $500.00.

That was pretty much what I thought before I joined Head-Fi. It was 'price decides the quality' for me that time. But now, I am a clever consumer after joining Head-Fi

For that price, I would rather get Blox TM5. They will compete fine with high-end universals and are easy to drive.
