it looks like an entire assembly. Those generally go for $70-80.

If you can, try to find a printer that lets you simply swap out the toner cartridge. It's basically just a cylinder inside the assembly that you twist and pull to take out. Those typically cost $30-40, sometimes less.
I really can't find a printer that doesn't have the drum integrated into the cartridge. In the long run, it is probably cheaper, but then you have to factor in the cost of the drum. Can you help me find one that is networked and has a separate drum?

Sorry, I can't think of one off the top of my head. For all I know, maybe all newer laser printers are like that now. Maybe try asking at your nearest office supply store?

Hey, so today I was contemplating buying a used Laserjet 4000n, and I can buy one for about one hundred dollars. It networks fine, and I can put a whole ream of paper into the tray(unlike my 6310's small, long tray). When I am buying a used laser, should I buy worried about the number of prints that the machine has gone through? MCC said that his dad's 4000's have gone through millions of pages, and the ones I have seen on ebay have gone through less than 60,000. Do I need to worry about the print count, or just look at the cosmetics/price? Should I expect these to last another 5-10 years? Does the 4000 have a separate drum(and if so, how much does it cost to replace?)

The best thing about the 4000's is the toner price. Remanufactered carts cost less than $60 for the 27x, which yields 10000 sheets. Monoprice has them for $22, and since I've used their ink, I think their toner will be just as high quality.

I've been looking at these. How do they look?

You know what, if you can get a good price on some used stuff that's in decent condition, just snap it up and grab a couple toners while you're at it and it'll last you for a while. The way the prices for these things work, it'll usually just be cheaper to replace the whole thing rather than fixing it if/when things eventually break.

Looking at your two choices there, the second one seems the obvious pick at lower page count and cheaper price.

I just realized that the second one has a broken screen, so that's out of the pool. Everything about the first one seems fine, except those green stickers in the second picture. Are those removable or is it just part of the cartridge, which will be eventually replaced? It doesn't include the dust protector for the paper tray in the back, but that's not a really big deal(correct me if i'm wrong). I'll have to see how well the duplexers work for the 4000. If they're great and quiet, i'll buy one, since they are about $40.

The 4000 is a great printer for text but it can take a long time to start printing graphically heavy pages. Then again, ours only have 4MB of RAM and those have 8MB.

They were over $1000 originally which probably contributes to their indestructible nature.

Well, thats ok, because most of what I print is text anyway. If I buy the one thats gone through 43k, how long do you think it'll last me? I think the drum is embedded into the cartridge of this model, and toner prices are quite cheap.

Sorry for the large picture, but what exactly are those green stickers? It looks like its telling you to pull, but as I don't have a 4000 in front of me, I don't know if that apparatus is replaced regularly(ie the toner), or the sticker is removable.

the sticker is attached to the toner. it basically tells you how to remove the toner.

edit: on second thought, scratch that. the toner should be on top when you open the top lid. that sticker shown in the middle should be where the tray feed or feeder is (for envelopes). which you can remove and clean.

It's hard to say since this model is already over a decade old. 43k is a low number for this type of printer though so it should hold up mechanically for quite some time.

The 4000 series DOES have some electrolytic capacitors inside which could be a potential point of age-related failure. I'd guess that the (replaceable) electronics would fail before the printer itself does.
