So my Inkjet Printer just died...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! There goes my HW.

Anyway, I was trying to print out a coupon from my brother's Vista Laptop, and then the printer suddenly had the dreaded "Ink Cartridge error". I've had the HP 6310 since the beginning of 2007, and I've used the official cartridges from 07-08, then I switched over to Monoprice cartridges this year. I was getting tired of the high price of these cartridges, $23.99+tax for ~300 pages. Basically, it was 8cents per page, and I had to replace them every 5months. Yep, sucks big time. I was thinking about switching over to laser for the longest time, but I have no incentive to switch something that still works. Looks like I do now./ (Sad and Happy at the same time).

So, like a smart consumer, I began to look at laser printer brands at Newegg. I went onto the manufacturer's site and searched the replacement toners for the highest yield. I was looking at the highest yield toner, and then looking at which printer it was compatible for. Of course, the printer had to be in production, because I don't feel like getting a used printer. I looked at Samsung's site, and found the ML-2851, which has a 5000yield cartridge for ~$100. I guess this is decent, since it is around 1cent per print, a LARGE drop from 8cents. Coincidentily, it also had a duplexer(which makes me easier to print on both sides. I did manual duplexing w/the 6310), and networking, which I needed. I share my printer with my brother, who just got into college this year, and is printing ALOT of things. We NEVER print photos at home, and we order prints from Snapfish, so I don't think we really need a inkjet. Seems like the printer broke in the right time.

He'll probably hate the fact that we will not have an all in one anymore, since I have not found a decent laser all in one with network capability or adequate toner yield. That just means we'll have to copy our pages somewhere else. Certainly a home copier is convenient, but it simply does not justifiy having a printer with overpriced ink/toner. We copy about 3 pages per month, and together we print around 20-30 pages per month. I guess we still do save money, even accounting copying at the library at 20cents per copy.

What other laser printers do head-fiers recommend? What brands are the best for laser printers (CERTAINLY not buying another HP). How did your transition between inkjet to laser occur?

Good riddance to 8 cent pages!

HP lasers are actually quite good. Dad's business has several HP Laserjet 4000s with anywhere from 250k to 3/4 million pages on them and all are still going strong. We also had an original Laserjet (1985) that only died a few years ago.

I wouldn't recommend anything HP branded other than laser printers and monitors though.

You didn't specify what you want the printer for. If it's printing photos, no laser is going to do as good a job as an inkjet or dye-sub, but the best option in most cases is a Noritsu digital minilab at your local Costco.

My family has used some incarnation of the laser Brother all-in-ones for several years now. The only problems have all been directly related to my dad trying to "fix" the printer.

I bought a $45 brother laser printer about 3 years ago when it's on sale.
One of the best bang for the buck, working like a charm. Toner is cheap when you search internet.
Frequently on sale at staples and officedepot.

No, actually all I need it for is text.

Sorry, for some reason when I read "inkjet" I assumed color.

Monochrome lasers are incredibly cheap and compact these days. Unfortunately manufacturers have been stealthily jacking up the prices per page on the replacement cartridges, and you're right that HP don't build their laser printers like they used to.

I know you want to switch to a laser but......I've been using brother all in one's for years. You can get generic ink on the cheap on ebay. The technology to look for: make sure the print head is built into the printer and not the ink cartridge. brother is built into the printer. Check the model you want and then double check what I just wrote. Check ebay for cartridge pricing. You are only buying an ink refill and not a print head and ink refill.

HP is the standard and the pioneers of laserjet printers. They are seen in practically every company.

I recently purchased a HP laserjet p1006 thats going for about $100 everywhere. It's a straight up laser printer with no added features. So far it's working pretty good for me.

My old printer was a HP psc1210 all-in-one ink jet. It didn't really break, but the rollers were worn out and I didn't feel like replacing it.

R.I.P. Inkjet Printer.

Inkjet's are just useless IMO. As for my switch it was a lot like yours. My big issue with inkjets is they clog if not used, if used you usually have to do a cleaning cycle using up ink. A laser can sit for six months no problem.

Keep in mind if you have an all in one the fax, copy part still work. I use my laser for printing and still use a useless clogged all in one inkjet for faxes and scanning.

If picking a laserjet, make sure it's one where you can simply replace the toner and not have to change out the entire drum assembly.

Can you help me find out if I need to replace the whole entire drum assembly with the ML-2855ND?

Just going by the pic here: link
it looks like an entire assembly. Those generally go for $70-80.

If you can, try to find a printer that lets you simply swap out the toner cartridge. It's basically just a cylinder inside the assembly that you twist and pull to take out. Those typically cost $30-40, sometimes less.
