10 minutes ago i dropped my ipod, and it experienced a pretty big impact on my wood floors. It fell approx 2-4 feet. Now i tried to start it up but got the dead ipod screen saying going to the apple website for help. I opened up the ipod and reconnected everything and still has the error. I reconnected the hard drive twice and I still got the error. So my solution was to replace the hard drive.

I was woundering if you guys had any ideas on the problem before i go ahead and purchase a new hard drive, and if replacing the hard drive was the only solution, do anyone know a legitamite website to buy the hard drive?

Thanks

RapidRepair. They are a reputable vendor, although you'll pay a premium for them.

I would also recommend eBay, as long as the seller has a good rep and possibly a no-DOA guarantee.

Check ebay. They've got some great deals. Be sure to see whether it's new or used though. Some used hard drives will probably be fine, but there are sellers that sell defective drives (but most of them make it clear they're defective and sell them very cheaply).

Also, make sure you verify your iPod's generation before buying a hard drive. 3rd and 4th gen hard drives won't work with 5th gens since they have a different connector. If you buy one off ebay, make sure you see a picture of the actual hard drive. People mislabel iPod gens all the time on ebay, but iPod parts sellers usually get it right.

If you have enough time and money, you might also want to consider a compact flash mod. Probably not your best option, but it's just a thought to consider.

If you're going to get a new hdd anyway, you might as well just go for the compact flash mod unless you have an 80 gb hdd that you want to retain. The drive will cost you more than the compact flash + zif adapter, and it won't fail on you when you drop it. Much faster as well, I love my CF modded ipod video.

Yeah i am considering a CF mod onto my iPod. I have enough saved up for a replacement harddrive, but it is mechanical. I can save up later and do a CF mod, which i should have enough for in a week or two. Maybe i should buy a replacement, and if that fails I will go into the CF mod. So far i had two harddrives fail on me, becuase one i was clumsy enough to drop them, and the other one of them just stopped working out of no where.

If you change your mind and decide to stick with the hard drive you can put this 60gb in your 30gb housing. This is the slim single platter drive which should fit with no problem.
