its almost christmas,

im looking for just a basic player, but tough as possible.

for an 8 year old kid (boy) that is likely to climb trees and skate with it every day.

tough first, size and sound dont matter.

$5- $50

SanDisk Sansa Shaker maybe?
Look durable and easy to control.

the old Sansa m200 series were DAMN sturdy and bricks if you got a case
maybe those

but what I am wondering is why would you give an mp3 player to an 8 year old...

The Sandisk E200 series (E230, E240,....) are built like tanks. I bought refurbished ones for my sons (aged 8, 8, and 11) two years ago and they are still going strong. Plus, they are very easy to use.

My Sansa Clip has been quite durable, though really I'd just pick up a $5 player from any discount bin/dollar store. Just find one that's about the size of a AA battery, and shove it into an old aspirin bottle with some foam. Voila, instant durable mp3 player on the cheap.

I've long thougt that the iRiver Clix2 is the ideal kids player. My step-daughter is a careful little soul, but she's taken hers with her everywhere for more than 2 years now and it's taken a few bumps and never looked like being damaged.

I was going to suggest the Sansa Shaker.
