My dad picked up an X-Fi XtremeGamer today, and I was showing him how to change between Entertainment mode for music/movies and Gaming mode for gaming (yes, my dad games), but I noticed something funny.

When we started, it was in Gaming mode with his settings of choice. We changed to Entertainment mode and disabled CMSS-3D, and it all sounded great, but when we went back to Gaming mode, and re-enabled CMSS-3D, we noticed that everything sounded... different.

In Ventrilo some people sounded the same while some sounded more muddled, overall sounds sounded somewhat more clear, but it's still weird, can anybody explain why this is happening?

We even tried resetting to default settings then completely setting up all of his old settings in gaming mode again, and it's doing the same thing.

UPDATE: Ingame, the 3D positioning sounds more precise for some reason (CMSS-3D is on, but it was on before too...), but the distance of sound seems random. My teammate will shoot from behind me and it'll be fairly loud, then again and it'll sound like he's across the map.

Everything sounds different as well, more distant I guess would be the word, as well as quieter overall. This isn't just ingame either.

I find this REALLY weird.

Ok, so after a bit of further testing, it seems to have corrected itself... sort of...

Volume is loud enough again and at least sounds normal, but it seems louder by a wide margin, and for some reason when we try to lower the volume, whenever the PC is restarted the volume resets to 65.

There are also certain spots in the 3D plane that are quieter than most.

That's what CMSS-3D do, makes everything sounds like you are in a big room... but not. It is also the reason why I don't use it.

Thats not quite right. Reverb makes everything sound like it is in a room.

CMSS-3D has two parts.
One part is for upmxing music from 2.0 to surround.
Second part is CMSS3D for headphones which take surround sound and virtualizes it for use on headphones.
Many use CMSS3D for gaming as you can get accurate imaging in a surround feild when using headphones.
Like other virtual technologies, some like it and some do not.

Make sure your using the latest drivers.

Also, is the "Enable SVM" enabled? Your in gaming mode right so it should be easy to find..in the mixer pane. This might be the cause....

SVM is off. I updated drivers, and everything seemed like twice as loud at the same volume settings, but I turned the master volume down and it seems fine now. If anything else comes up I'll post back but for now it's good.

There are two faders, the main volume and the WAVE fader. Sometimes the Wave slider can be adjusted from inside an application or game and while the master looks the same level the wave is higher the it previously was.
This is the only thing I can think it may have been considering your "symptoms".

Enjoy your new card.
