After having issues with AVG's basic features like automatic updating, I was fed up with it.

If AVG doesn't detect an internet connection when it boots up, it will never check for updates again. Desktop users with ethernet will not notice this, but a mobile user would have to always manually update because he/she frequently boots up with no internet connection.

So far Microsoft Security Essentials has been a breath of fresh air. I don't know how well it really works (because I am careful when surfing the web) but for these categories it gets a 10:

1. Easy to configure.

2. No user interaction required to maintain.

3. Staying in the background and acting like it doesn't exist.

I am only interested in the active monitor aspect, so I haven't been scanning often.

There are two processes associated with this software:

MsMpEng.exe - 50,700k

msseces.exe - 7,500k

So far I haven't noticed any slowdowns. This is on a core 2 duo 2.4 desktop.

i have to use zone alarm on w7 cause i know of no better program control linked firewall, i find it almost essential in its rigorous and stringent rules

i think avast is using less than Microsofts too by that count^
