recommendation for a new IEM

Hi
I've been using a pair of shure e3cs for the last 2 years which I liked greatly. Unfortunately I accidentally ended up breaking it. It accidentally broke off the tip in one of my ears. I'd like to get a new one. I read this guide here
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/r...2-08-a-335851/

also saw guides here on the PL50 and the RE0.

I listen to a whole variety of music styles. classic rock, trance/techno and dancey music, 80s and 90s pop, punk, heavy metal and thrash. A little bit of classical.

So Im guessing Ill want one which is kinda neutral. But I don't know more than that. I'm looking to get something sub 200$ (though I wouldnt mind spending less ofcourse =p). If there is something which is a fantastic deal right now do let me know.

If possible I'd like to avoid buying an IEM that requires an amp. And ideally one that comes with everything I need (or if I should buy something + some accessories do let me know)

thanks

either are great, the pl50 is more like what you had, mid focused. the re0 is a clear step above it but maybe a bit more treble than you may want or be used to.

Im worried that the RE0 needs an amp though. Is there any other IEM I should be looking at that I may not have mentioned? Since I'm buying just one IEM, I'm not averse to buying something that costs a little more that gives me everything I need.

The RE0 doesn't need an amp, but it likes one. Amping flattens it out, and gives it a more normal sound. Without an amp, it has a marked treble presence that can make it brittle-sounding without EQ.

ah I see.
1) how much of a pain is carrying the amp around?
2) so how about the others? Like the shure products?

Frankly, there's a TON of earphone products under $200 that are great. There's a hundred products you're not even looking yet.

The main factor that will determine which of the plethora of earphones out there you will actually like best will be personal preference.

So, what is your personal preferernce?

Bass, mids, highs? How much of each?
Level of clarity/detail?
Dynamic or laid back?
Open, big sound or in your face, intimate?

well really thats what I mean't. Im not married to those options. If there's another IEM I should be looking at, Id love to know. The problem is I can't answer the question since the Shure e3c is the only one Ive had and I kinda liked it. I think I'd like high clarity and since I listen to a variety of music I'd like the music to sound as originally intended. If possible a small amount of passive noise cancelling in noisy environments (though thats not very essential cause with my e3cs sound was pretty much blocked out).

really for $200, get both the PL-50 and the RE-0

Do you normally use an iPod? There is a portable amp for iPod, the Fiio E1, that costs 22$. There is a review of it on the forums.
