KSC75 Reliability

Hello,

My 5th pair of KSC75s just went out on me, for the fourth time the left channel went out, and for the fourth time I assumed it was the cable and soldered a new one on, and as you can guess for the fourth time the problem was not the cable but appears to be the driver itself. I know I can send them back under warranty but I'm tired of them going out on me. I cant seem to get into the driver itself to check it as I can't disassemble the plastic housing (please correct me if there is a way to do this.

The main problem is, the 75s are by far the best sounding portable headphones to me, and I don't want to give them up, but at this rate, I find myself wondering if there's something else that sounds as good but is more reliable.

I have 2 questions:

1. If I do replace the 75s is there anything I can do to make them stronger? I only use them at work and they get minimal wear and tear but seem to break on me, maybe I can add some strong glue somewhere or mod them or something?

2. Are there any other similar phones out there (clip ons) that sound as good or better for say $50 or under that will be more durable?

Thanks for your help.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I would keep on sending them back to koss. Might as well...

You could try the Yuin G2A sold at head-direct.com for 50 clams. They are getting rave reviews and may be more durable then the ksc75.

Yes I was thinking about the G2As, if they are more durable I will certainly take a look, thanks.

I didn't find the G2A to be more durable than the KSC75. The cabling is thinner and the clips don't have wire inside them, so they will snap if you try to bend them. That said, I have four pairs of KSC75s, the oldest one ~3 years old, and haven't had any problems with any of them.

The KSC35 are the only other clip-on that comes to mind besides the ATH ones and I'm not sure the build quality is any different on that than the KSC75.

Also, the KSC75's are really easy to re-cable.

I've had 2 drivers fail out of around 40 sets of KSC75 recables.
I've been a fan of the Koss clip headphones for years but now I think the Yuin G2a sound better. However, I do prefer the clips on the KSC75 because you can bend them into shape to fit your ears. They do fit on the G2a so I switch them and have the best of both worlds.

Attached a pic of a KSC75 short recable I did with an extension cable.

Ok I found an older pair of KSC75s and was going to make a good pair out of two. However, both of the drivers from the older pair play at a very very low volume when I hook them up, even with a new cable, what does this indicate? A blown driver?

That recable looks awesome, very neat did you make the cable yourself?

At any rate, I've caved again and ordered another pair of 75s, I guess next time I will use the warranty instead of trying to fix them

Thanks again.
