How many types of Rock are there ?

I am just starting to read this forum frquently in my quest for new music. My post has really paid off and has led to discovering some excellent music.

But I must admit I feel a bit out of touch when I read some of the discriptions of the types of rock.

I am embarrassed to admit I am a big fan of progressive rock from the 60's but I did not realize it was catagorized as such.

I have seen the terms "epic" "thrash" "doom" "Precission Metal "and many other which discribe rock. Would anyone like to take a stab at defining some of these as well as the other terms used to catogorize Rock. It would help if you can give an example of a band who conforms to these terms.

Thanks. Understanding music types will lead to a better appreciation.

Those are all sub-genres of metal, a type of rock. (there are FAR too many sub-genres to count)

Usually when I like something this much I am able to discuss it. I did not even realize it was a genre.

I mentioned this on another thread, the term "rock" is broadly used. I think the new genre of music took on the title of rock for marketing purposes.

Ok

So Pink Flyod is not considered Stoner rock but progressive.

Someone needs to explain this to the people outside the Pink Flyod laser shows

A lot of genres overlap, but let's see....

Alternative Rock
Arena Rock
Art Rock
Classic Rock
Experimental Rock
Hard Rock
Indie Rock
Pop Rock
Post Rock
Power Pop Rock
Progressive Rock
Psychedelic Rock
Punk Rock
.....eh this getting tiring......but probably if you were to name every genre ever named for Rock you'd end up somewhere in the 150 to 200 range.....just a guess..........but if you were to dwindle the list down to the most umbrella like genres you could probably do it in a dozen or less

Rock, much like punk seems to be about a state of mind. So you either rock or you don't. Therefor I'd say the answer to your question is 1

RMVA

I would think that the Christian Rockers and the doom rockers would disagree but I take your point.
