What to buy? Other than Skullcandy

Hi, this is my first post here. I was thinking about buying some Skullcandy Skullcrushers, but after reading around here I realized Skullcandy isn't all that great. So I am looking for a headphone that has good bass support, is portable (with iPod or whatever), and looks good. I already looked at headphones like the grado-sr60s, but they don't look good. Anyone have any suggestions? If not, I'm just going to buy some Skullcandys because they look good

what's your price range?
what kind of music do you listen to?
how imporant is isolation(aka closed 'phones like the skullcrushers, or open ones like the grados)
and are you willing to use IEM(in ear montiers, like earbuds[think stock ipod] but they go into your ear canal instead of resting outside of it.?

Budget? Size preference? Closed (Skullcrushers)? Open (Grado)? Maybe even in-ear? What kind of music do you listen to? Do they need to be isolated? A little more information please.

Someone beat me to it.

screw it, just get the skullcrushers.

M-Audio Q40 will give you a massive amount of bass (if that's what you're after) and look pretty good IMO.

Alternatives: JVC HA-M750, ATH-ES7, AKG K81dj/K518dj/K518le (these are more portable)

Lets see, I'm looking at under 100$ maybe? I have a lot of money, I can pay for more.

I listen to grunge rock right now, Pearl Jam, Audioslave, and all that, but I really listen to anything (I say right now because I change a lot, but it stays within the rock genre). But I do reach out to rap, classical, and even jazz. I would prefer closed, for the noise cancellation. I love good bass so thats why I wanted those skullcrushers. And they have to look good too.

Thanks for the help so far too.

This thread title is great. It eliminates the possibility of someone recommending Skullcandy. You know, just in case that was going to happen.

I don't really have a personal recommendation on closed headphones, because I personally prefer open. But there was a good article posted recently called "15 closed headphones":

Haha yeah, it didn't take me too much reading here to realize Skullcandy isn't a good choice.

Honestly, I don't know whether closed or open is better, I am looking for something with good noise cancellation though

The best attenuation of outside noise will come from either closed headphones or IEM's (In Ear Monitors). So open headphones are not the choice for that. If that's not a consideration, open headphones generally have better soundstage (location of instruments) and a more open sound. Closed headphones block out more sound from getting in or out. IEM's seal in your ear, so they block the most sound of all in many cases.

Ok, so yeah I was looking at closed headphones. If IEMs are what I think they are, I already own a pair (its a pair of sonys). They are close to falling apart though, the wire insulation is stripping.

So could anyone recommend some closed headphones for me? Good bass, maybe adjustable bass? Portable for iPod, and has a good sound no matter what genre (I listen to them all). And make it look good?

I'm still looking around, checking out Sony and JVC right now

JVC HA-M750.

Portapros have great bass, whether they look good or not is up to you.

I'm sorry, but the skullcrushers are the worst headphone I've listened to in the period I've known something about headphones.. The bass is far from "good". It's loud and shaky, but distorts and doesn't play melodies. You do want to hear bass-notes, right?

... For that price I think the Sony 7056's are probably up your valley. If you can stretch, go for Sennheiser HD25-1's. They look neutral. I think neutral is good
