Any speaker cable/wire suggestions?

Hi all,

My set up is the Cary Xciter amp (running a big 5 watts flea power out) and DAC and my monitors are medium efficiency: 87db at 4 ohms. I am in seventh heaven with my Cary set up when I use it with my headphones. Because the Cary offers the possibility of use with speakers, though, I'd like to see what I can do with that. I realize that power/sensitivity wise, this sounds like a mismatched system, but in actuality, it suits my current needs quite well (honestly!). Again, I use my Cary system primarily with my headphones, and in that respect, I think it's world class. (One day, I will probably use the monitors in a bigger space, with a different amp - but that's down the road.)

My fairly high quality monitors currently are placed not more than a couple of inches away from the Cary Xciter stack, and both sit on my bedroom night stand, a maximum of about two feet or so away from where I listen to them. My source is a laptop with red book cd and high bit stream internet radio. I'm in a small apartment in Queens New York. I'm very happy with my monitors, recognizing of course that they serve my needs/situation quite well - crisp, clear sound, even at low volume, and of course, not really capable of going very low bass-wise. I love their detail, and don't think they're sterile-sounding.

The bedroom is pretty small, in a "pre-war" building, say, about 4 on a scale of 10 size-wise, and I don't play my speakers really loudly - they're best now with solo instrumentals, chant, vocals, etc. Of course, weaker with classic rock or large-scale orchestral music.

So why even bother asking about speaker cables/wires? Well, I'm just very curious to see what will happen with my pretty nice system if I go beyond my current two-feet or so worth of 16 gauge Radio Shack speaker wire (using banana plugs).

Any suggestions, speaker cable-wise, used or new, that you think would improve my system, would be greatly appreciated. As for length, for now, I really don't need much more than a couple of feet max - but if longer, as long as any loss would be negligible, that would be okay. I'm curious, again, just how much better I can do than my simple Radio Shack wires.

Or do you all think I'm set up pretty well now with what I'm using? ...

Thanks.

Snap up some heavy duty neotech 12 gauge maybe OCC copper from partsconnexion, 4 equal lengths, put some spades or bananas on the end, twist the +/- wires for each channel together, done. That stuff will beat the tar out of radio shack wire.

I use bare 12 gauge Belden 5000UE for speaker wire, and it works just fine at less than $1 a foot. It's just oxygen-free copper. It doesn't add or take anything away that I can tell. I choose not to terminate my wires because it's two less connections in the chain that can not possibly improve the sound. I make my wires longer than necessary so that every so often I can cut away the ends and expose fresh copper.

My opinion is that this is all you need if you are happy with the sound of your equipment. Belden and Mogami are used in studios all over because of their transparency. I think if you need to buy speaker cables that attenuate certain frequencies (which is the only way a speaker cable can really alter the sound since there is no gain to them) then you should be looking at where the problem really lies because you must not be happy with the sound of your equipment or speakers as-is.

Whether the Belden sounds any better than the Radio Shack cables, I don't know. I think as long as your Radio Shack cables are oxygen free copper of a sufficient gauge, they should be transparent as well.

Thanks guys - I knew I could get some helpful advice here, much appreciated!

Scooter, I just saw another post of yours:

That's the link to the Neotech wire. It's solid core so it's stiff as a mofo; it wouldn't be my choice but Neotech does sound good if you can put up with it.
The difference between the 4TC and the 8TC is basically that the 8TC is double the "size". Instead of 8 conductors total (13awg per +/-), there are 16 conductors total (9awg per +/-). I'd personally go with the 8TC but if practicality and bang for the buck is what you're going for, the 4TC would probably be the better choice. Of course you could save yourself a bundle of money and just buy a small spool of Canare 4S11 and call it a day.

Given the choice between the Belden and this, how practical, then, would the Neotech be? (Given my small space, I want to keep the wire - from a purely aesthetic point of view - as low profile as possible).

Thanks again.

For a 2' run 16 gauge is more than adequate and there will be no signal loss worth mentioning, for longer runs you could get some monoprice 12 gauge for about $12 for a 50' run, they may do smaller reels as well ??
