My Iriver H340 finally died after 4 glorious years. Now I'm left to fend for myself again in search of a new mp3 player. What is the general consensus for best mp3 player out there that is not iPod?

HifiMan is king, but it's also expensive. It's in the ad right above this thread. lol Cowons are decent too without breaking the bank.

Would you really class the HifiMan as an mp3 player.

Go for the cowon s9, great sound, excellent autonomy, good oled screen and format compatibility

If FLAC is your priority than the S9 is the king. If not the Sony X1060 takes the crown imo.

x2 on Cowon. Haven't heard or used the S9 to be honest, but I have or have had four of their earlier models, and the SQ is superb. They do use sound enhancement (BBE) which some purists may sniff at, but in my opinion it makes a positive difference. I believe the S9 uses the second generation, called BBE+ (I think).

My D2 broke, but so I bought another one a few days ago to replace it. I need my SD expansion slot and its small size is perfect for my workouts... I have been eyeing the Sony A840 though

Haven't found anything better than my Meizu M3. But then again, only tested it against about 4 other DAPs.

I would put my money on the HiFiMAN HM-801 as well.
Pre-ordering is not open as of right now, but I do not think it will take all that long for it to open again.

i still have doubts about the hifiman, while i suspect it provides the best sound quality out there, theres several issues with usability, ergonomics, features and general quality of music used in portable rigs not living up to the ability if the player,

I would buy another another iriver, seriously.

I dont know if I would =/. I was extremely pleased with my IFP-950. Magnesium casing and 40h battery time (my brother has it now) but the Clix2 was really a dissapointment.

The sound quality is great, especially with the SRS WOW eq (and so was the screen) but the overall quality wasn't good at all. The buttons squeak, the battery time sucks and what happened to all the accessories? The newest ones might be better though.

I still like it more than ipods but thats about it.

A bit off topic but it seems like the clix2 only goes into standby mode (instead of shuting down) is there away to come arround this?

Hmmm... Why is everything in 32gb format now? My Iriver 340 was 40 gigs...

What about those "Old" Zunes made 2 years ago?

By the way how did mp3 players come to have less space but became more expensive? Is it due to touchscreens?

How are the Zunes made 2 years ago? I'm doing ebay searches and they can be had for half the price with twice the storage. Do they play every format?
