SOS!!!

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum...or perhaps even the wrong site...but I need some ideas from the technologically inclined, and I know that all of you have surround sound systems at home.

I am new to audiophilia, but I enjoy it. My first pair of IEMs opened my eyes to your world, and I haven't looked back.

SOS = Save Our Surround sound

I moved back to NY after graduating law school and bought an apartment. After buying a new unit for the tv, etc., I hooked up my surround sound. It is a Panasonic setup, which will impress none of you.

For some reason, I cannot get the TV audio to feed through my surround sound speakers. I know that the setup is right; all that has changed is my source for cable: rather than a coax into the tv (the setup in law school) we have a Fios box. The main unit is connected via HDMI. I also know it's not the speakers, because sound from dvds plays through the system (the main unit has a player). The best way I can describe the problem is to say that, for whatever reason, the tv does not want to send audio to the surround sound; the dvd player sends video into the tv when appropriate, but the tv refuses to send the audio in the other direction. Interestingly enough, the tv and surround sound system are communicating as they normally would: when I trigger surround sound through the tv, it switches the surround sound system to auxilliary as it should. But still, no sound.

I would not be wasting your time if I were not desperate, but this is driving me crazy. If I have to waste bucks on another system my wife won't let me blow it on a set of cans. I am hoping one has run into this problem or can see some obvious flaw.

Any advice is much appreciated. And please

The high end audio forum at head-fi is not really the place for tech support, and reading through your description I don't think even the most qualified people on this site could help you much based on what you've told us.

Hmm...does the FIOS box have settings you can tinker with? Is it possible that the programming is not all dolby digital 5.1? Doesn't the panasonic have a button you can press to achieve ghetto 5.1 with stereo input?

You might want to try the AVS Forum. The people there are more in tune with home theater setups.

Not exactly sure of your set up but here goes...

The problem seems to be that your amp isn't registering that a signal is 5.1. I also get the impression that stereo works just not 5.1? Does Dolby pro-logic work, either theatre or music settings? Is there a setting on your amp where you can force the input to be always rendered stereo? What about settings on the Fios box? I know on my PS3 I can select which type of signal for it to output through my optical, from stereo to DTS. Check out any audio settings on the box too.

At the most basic level are all your cables in good condition? Are you positive your TV is capable of outputting a 5.1 signal to the amp? Are you able to hook your Fios to your amp and do a pass through for the video?

That's about all I can think of without knowing more about your setup

Thanks for moving the thread; thanks for the replies, all. I really appreciate this because I have been literally losing my mind. I am going to pm wantmyf1 and hopefully rectify this.

Thanks again, very much.
