If I read this right, you're talking about the number of in and out ports on a midi interface.

I own an 8x8 (8 ins, 8 outs) interface and a 4x4 one too. SO just from 1x1 to 2x2, there would be no difference but the number of midi ports on the interface.

so what does the number of midi ports on the interface mean?

It means that the interface can handle the amount of midi devices associated with the number of ports it has.

For example, a 2x2 has 2 ins and 2 outs, therefore you can plug 2 separate midi devices that can be controlled separately, from a computer or hardware midi sequencer.

And even in the case of only having a 1x1 you can still connect multiple MIDI devices by chaining them using the MIDI Thru (as long as the MIDI devices have a MIDI Thru port). And you can always add a MIDI Thru box for additional MIDI connections. So a 1x1 doesn't limit you too much. Better though to start out with a MIDI controller that has enough ports for the devices you'll be using. Relying on MIDI Thru can be a source of problems or difficulty (redundant warning cause MIDI is always a source of problems and difficulty).
