External DAC in Combination with AuzenTech Card?

I was wondering, if you were to attach an external DAC to an AuzenTech HTHD card through a Optical or Coaxial interconnect, would you maintain the 3D positioning advantage in gaming that the X-Fi chip of the sound card gives you, and just receive a better quality sound, or as the signal is being converted outside the card do you lose that advantage?

I ask this as I'm considering getting the money together for the HeadRoom Micro Amp/DAC, but I don't want to bother if it affects the positioning audio benefits the card gives you for gaming.

Yes. You will maintain the same positioning and other features but with a DAC it is only stereo or Headphones. I have used a similar configuration for a while and there is a few other people with high end DAC's connected to their cards.
Hope that Helps.

So essentially I can use the Micro stack for my gaming and headphone listening without any change other than improved audio quality, but if I want to hook up the HDMI function to my TV for Blu-Ray movies I have to just unhook the DAC and then hook up the HDMI/7.1 stuff?

You can leave the DAC connected to the S/Pdif aswell as the HDMI connection. You select the outputs you want within the cards drivers.
