Sony PSP-2000, how's the SQ?

Since I lost my Creative Zen V to the washing machine, I've been "stuck" lugging around a (still sizable) PSP Slim.

I can't really compare the SQ against other portable sources and don't really have reference headphones yet.

I know that the PSP fat is largely documented as having mediocre SQ but I wonder if the slim version did anything to fix that. I'll get a sansa fuze and throw the PSP in my backpack again if the SQ is a known problem.

What I do have is the Phat, Slim, and a Sansa Fuze.
The Phat's SQ is indeed mediocre, and the Slim's isn't much better.

Sorry was trying not to laugh when you said you lost your Creative Zen V in the washing machine, was that the Zen Vision M ? How the heck did you manage to put a Zen into the washing machine.

So I suppose its completely had it.

PSP3000 SQ for tunes sux, get a real DAP for audio. For vids it's isn't so bad, but the limited space and high cost of the proprietary memory cards sux as well.

Again, considering that SQ on the PSP itself is godawful, and that games use heavily compressed audio, you're going to get terrible sound quality, as expected.
Although in most games you're busy doing something other than listening to the background music, so no major loss there.

It's a meh for me. Small soundstage, little to no bass, really not much to write home about. I actually used it as my main DAP while I waited for 32gb S9. I sold it a while back so my memory might be lagging a bit here.

the zen V is pretty small and I missed it when inspecting my pockets.

*edit* I just found a sansa m240 laying around. Look at that!

Alright, the hyperbolic responses having not quite satisfied me, I decided to do some quick A/Bing.

A) Realtek ALC889A > stock long cable > FiiO E5 > AKG K81
B) Sony PSP-2000 > stock short cable > FiiO E5 > AKG K81
C) Sansa m240 > short cable > FiiO E5 > AKG K81

(ALC889A being the audio codec inside the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P)

The A setup is reference. It's rather transparent overall but not that detailed and natural.

The PSP with the EQ off sounds ok but it really shines with the "Jazz" preset. Don't ask me what it does but it sounds good. Most EQ presets sound better and fuller than with EQ off. The highs are kind of rough around the edges I have to say. A good graphical equalizer would do so much for the PSP IMO.

The m240 is the most natural, extended and articulate of the lot. Through all the frequencies I think. From the PSP it takes the rough out of the mids/highs.

All in all, I rather be plugged into the sansa. But I have a feeling my incoming RE0's will do more for me in exposing the sources.

When you get the RE0s, you'll probably find that the PSP is not worth bothering with. I agree that the Jazz setting does help somehow, but it's still not great. Spend the money and pick up a Sansa Fuze or Clip, and never look back.
