Removing Hair from DT-770 Driver - It's Sticky??? (picture)

I bought a pair of severely discounted dt-770's on ebay. The prior owner must have had a seriously bad hair day....

The membrane on the outside of the driver is kinda sticky like scotch tape. Tugging on the large hairs seems to also tug on the membrane. The small hairs seem impossibly stuck to the thing. You don't even want to see the pads...

Can I use some sort of solvent to wipe the hairs off of the driver membrane? Using tweezers will pierce the thing...

wrap electric tape around the tweezers then just slowly pull it off while applying a small amount of pressure to keep the driver in place.

I used about 4 feet of electrical tape & it got all of the coarse hairs off. There are still about 10 very fine hairs on each driver. They're like fine dog or cat hair. They seem to be fused to the driver. I tried wiping the thing down with a cotton ball soaked in water, but they're staying put...

Both drivers membranes ended up having a 0.25mm x 0.5mm hole torn into it. I was fishing around on the back side for hairs & didn't realize that they weren't part of the cloth protective layer. I patched them with GE Silicone I caulk (the one without mildew guard / arsenic additives) on a q-tip.

Upon first listening this morning, There's still a little distortion below 50hz on the left driver (HAIR), but it's definitely an improvement. I think I'll be shopping for some new cans come Christmas time unless I find some cheap replacement drivers on eBay.

That's impressive and disgusting that someone was able to accomplish that.

I'd probably keep them for parts and get a newer pair.

I was wondering when someone was going to bring this up. You didn't buy these from Nikongod did you?

the 770 drivers are so well protected that I have a hard time understanding how all that stuff got in there in the first place...maybe the guy was a hairdresser and/or liked to do skanky stuff w/ headphones?

Well.. I was floored at how bad they were... All of the original protective layers were in place when I received them. I didn't think it was possible to mess headphones up this badly. I'm bald, so I never really assumed hair would ever be an issue for me.

My impression is that the guy walked to work or something in them... The silver pads were stained brown & matted down with sweat when I got them & they smelled gross.

I put the pads & foam in the washer with a ton of hydrogen peroxide & there were tons of thick white (from the bleach) hairs stuck in the foam.

I had to remove the white acoustically transparent cloth that sits over the metal grille. It had hairs like weaved in & out of it. There were hairs stuck in the thick cloth that makes up the little baffle chambers on the driver mount.

I didn't find any hairs in the little white felt rings that go around the driver... So I guess it could have been worse.

Next time I buy used, I'll not make my decision based on a cell phone photo.

I think you just reinforced everyone of the reasons I have for not buying used headphones!
