FWIW I substituted Swans S3Ws for my A2s. They're quite compact (a bit larger than softballs) and the amp is built into a very nice-feeling volume knob that you can position where you like. The sound is, well, a compromise, but as compromises go I think it's pretty good, and to my ears more listenable than the (relatively few) other small-form-factor systems that I've tried. Quite reasonably priced, so you won't have to save up your money for long.
