SSD on an Ipod? - Page 4

This is really disappointing to hear. You are experiencing the exact same problem I had with my attempt in trying a faster 32gb CF in my converted iMod (which happens to be a 30gb 5.5 iPod). I would rather stay with my 32gb that has been working flawlessly for the past 2 years rather than go back to the OEM firmware. Do keep us informed on how things pan out.

keep us updated. I'm tempted to get the 128gb SSD to stick into my diyMod.

Installed the Runcore 32G SSD on my iPod Video 30G last night. Works great so far

Tried Rockbox and got the same error too (ATA error -32)

annoying isn't it?

so much so that i've put the SSD in my macbook air and have fitted a 32GB CF drive to the ipod

should be a win-win, as i'll then be able to fit Blackgate NX caps inside the ipod

still would have liked rockbox on the SSD but i guess the code doesn't support it, and there's not enough of us to warrant the effort in including it. lmk if you get it working though - i wonder if i can run my MBA on a CF card? lol

Okay, I feel like an idiot now for not thinking of this!

Installing Rockbox would need a new bootloader to work with the CF / SSD mods.

I had tried something similar on IAudio and iriver H320.  I had to install a bootloader that would be compatible with the CF Mod.  I'm not sure if the standard rockbox installer has the modified bootloader ... search on rockbox.org wiki and forums for additional info.  I'm sure this can be done ...

And even then the increase in speed vs cost is highly debatable since the available processing power will cap transfer rates for starters.

iPods do increase in capacity actually; one could be turn in delusion by their cancellation of thick Classic.

There are 256GB 1.8" SSDs with ZIF interface (used in ipods 5th gen and later, zune and many others), even in a thin formfactor (5mm, "single-platter"), although the price is about $800.

And the main benefit from using SSD in a DAP is not a speed, but durability, power consumption, and, to a lesser extent, seek time.

Standart rockbox works well with CF on iPod, although afaik modifications should be done in order to gain full benefit from using CF. Some devices won't work with a plain CF at all.

And there should be no problems in replacing HDD with SSD in any player which supports HDD replacement. There is no difference between SSD and HDD on that logical level (and the difference between plain CF and HDD is that plain CF is represented logically as something like floppy drive, without MBR and partitions structure).

I installed a Super Talent 128GB SSD(FZM28GF18H) in my 5.5g but could not get it to work. I could not get it restored with itunes, the restore process start but then get hung up on the restarting. It seems that itunes thinks that it is a 32gb hard drive.
