SSD on an Ipod? - Page 3

I just put my camera on Ebay, along with the 2gb "extreme" card that I paid $250 for. It'll be nice once the drives really bottom out in price, I'm not holding my breath. It could be a nice change in scenery in the DAP market.

That 64GB Patriot is tempting.

Hmm... yes, the Patriot is at an attractive price point but it says for pre-order. If and when it becomes available I will consider it. Unfortunately, iPods can be pretty finicky with CF cards. I use the adapter made by Tarkan and he has compiled a list of what cards work and don't work. Unfortunately, no one has tried a 64gb yet. Rockboxed iPods (which mine is) tend to be less flaky though. S'pose if it didn't work I could convert into an HDD for my home computer. Decisions. Decisions.

well, the SSD arrived and it's now inside my 5G ipod video

works a treat, and is silent. access time is instant - no more spinning up - yay!

i'd do a hd_speed test on it now

EDIT:

15MB/s Read
11MB/s Write

not sure how that compares to the stock hard drive, or if it's limited by by laptop USB port?

pretty sure the drive itself is capable of more though - they claim 75 / 85 MB/s

still, i reckon it was worth it just for the lower power / heat and instant / quieter access

Once the 64gb cf cards drop to under $100USD, I'll spring for 1 and pop it in my iPod 5.5G, and enjoy my RockBoxed baby the way she's supposed to be - FAST!!!! I love that you guy's & gals have given me hope,.........................

Awesome...does the SSD fit tight inside your iPod Video?

it's exactly the same size as the original drive

i didn't even bother with the blue foam stuff, as there's no moving parts to protect

obrienk, congrats on the success of your mod, I'm so glad it worked out. This means quite a lot to me, and I'd surmise quite a few others here @HF. Really, you just paved the way for me and my itchy mod hand.

Now, do you have RockBox on the iPod? If so, are the access times really instantaneous??? I may spring for an SSD then, since I'm starting to sell a few items to fund an SSD or cf card purchase.

Thanks

Thanks for taking one for the team and trying this mod out. Now I may have to follow. Does itunes read the whole drive?
This indeed is good news!

i don't currently use rockbox, but i've been meaning to try it out, so will let you know

i'm also going to be sending it off to be diymod'ed with blackgate 47uF caps. i'm hoping the caps will fit internally, otherwise i might be forced to go the CF route, which wouldn't be a major problem - as the SSD would go in my macbook

the ipod itself sees 29.7GB in settings -> about...iTunes sees 29.73GB so it really does just think it's a hard drive

if nothing else, i've proved that it can be done literally took 2 mins to swap it over. i just disconnected the zif cable from the stock drive and popped it in the SSD

hanks for the update,.....now I just gotta wait for a 64gb decently priced cf card, or for the ssd prices to drop.

Damn, this is 1 expensive hobby - but worth the labor of luv in the end!!!!

well, i installed rockbox and got an ata error -32 ??

maybe because i used the firmware for the 30GB video and i now have a > 30GB drive?

anyone who's fitted a CF adapter did you need to use the 60/80GB video firmware?

EDIT: tried the 60/80GB video firmware and that gave ATA Error -11

personally, i like itunes so will stick with it, but can see that rockbox not working with it might be a show stopper for some

No, just use the firmware that was meant for your player. The difference lies in how much system memory there is, not the disk space. iirc, the 80gb has more memory.

I used to have the tarkan card with a 32gb cf card. I had to format the card to fat32, install it, restore the ipod with itunes, then finally install rockbox. I never got any ata errors.
the SSD drive is already FAT32

the ipodpatcher software works fine and detects the ipod and installs the bootloader. its just when it restarts that i get the error. i get different errors, depending on which .rockbox folder i use.

i'll contact the rockbox crew and see if they have any ideas
