SSD on an Ipod?

I think it would be a good idea if you could replace your hard drives on your ipod (classic, video etc...) with a solid state one. You can already do that with a CF card; the 64 and 128Gb were supposed to be out soon (?) but if they came, they will be quite expensive, jst as much as their equivalent on the ssd discs.

If only an adapter would be available, like this one but doing the opposite:

what do you think?

I think you are on to something.
The iPod do not use 2.5" drives though, and I am not sure about the required 1.8" drives.

Well I use an SSD in my computer, 128GB in fact. I don't think iPods will have SSD capabilities/come with them any time soon, it's like $500aud for 128/120GB. It will be quicker, but I think iPods are quick enough as it is. A 250GB SSD in a Classic would be wonderful, however, that will cost in excess of $1100.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean they won't come with SSDs anytime soon, as the iPhone/Touch already do. Just give it time. Soon enough capacity won't be an issue (between technology increasing the capacity itself, as well as wireless syncing, you'll be able to have all the content you desire at your fingertips).

You'll need an IDE SSD. This is one of the reason why the iPods don't increase in capacity from year to year anymore... manufacturers don't develop for IDE.


And even then the increase in speed vs cost is highly debatable since the available processing power will cap transfer rates for starters.

The advantages of flash storage are instant seek times, durability and weight reduction. Battery life might improve too.

You'll also need a flash drive with a ZIF connector or an adapter.

I just got done modding my iriver h320 into a 32gb flash player about an hour ago. Works great so far.

There is a seller on ebay who has a ssd adapter and drive for the Ipod. I thought I still had the link but looks like I've deleted it. I do remember that it was quite expensive though.

I think by the time SSD's prices become affordable, SDXCs with comparable capacity should be available as well and hopefully comparable in price, i.e., 1GB/$. And, hopefully as well, someone will have made an SDXC adapter.

I don't believe that either of these will work as the iPod uses a ZIF interface rather than 50pin.

However, this Samsung might do the trick. It is very pricey though, at $300 for 64gb and $549 for 128gb.

I think it depends on the Ipod model, the 4th gens are pata and can use the adapter/drive.
