Really, really cheap optical in DAC?

I'm deciding between two HDTV's, and the deciding factor between the two is that one has RCA audio outs, whereas the other only has a digital out. The price difference between the two would be too great if I can't find a cheap DAC (thus forcing me to go with the one with RCA outs), but if there's a really, really cheap ($30 shipped or less) DAC out there (I could give a rat's behind about the quality), I could go with the optical only one. Thanks in advance.

uhm... most 5.1 entertainment systems (read dvd-player) have optical in. i'm sure you'll have a dvd player laying around somewhere now do you? otherwise that might be an option, and you'll have a dvd player as well

If you're talking about using the audio outputs on your TV, then I'm guessing you are running your source directly into the TV and then to a receiver. Why aren't you running your source into your receiver instead?

A DVD player isn't going to have an optical input. It may have an optical output.

Is this to use for the audio output of OTA HDTV (not cable or satellite which would have a separate box)?
