Recommend me some jazz artists/albums

I picked up a DVDA simply entitled Brazilian Jazz. It has a number of selections from Bossa All Stars, Ricardo Leão, Armandinho, Claudio Guimarães, Mário Sève, Aquilo Del Nisso, Nilvaldo Ornelas, Aquarela Carioca, Torcuato Mariano, Marinho Boffa, Rui Motta, Vidor Santiago, and Antero Vilhena. So, I am looking into these artists' albums and what not.

I'm loving jazz now, especially these brazilian groups, so recommend me other people/groups. I don't remember listening to anything quite like these guys or else I would have gotten into this genre much earlier =]

Start at—or at least near—the beginning…

João Gilberto - João Gilberto

Also, maybe try work by:

Moacir Santos

The early work of Gilberto Gil and a lot of Stan Getz's work cover the Bossa Nova (Portuguese: New Trend). Also Belgium's 'Toots' Thielman is known for his 'Brasil project' and other bossa nova albums.

a few others;

Astrud Gilberto
Charlie Byrd
Antonio Carlos Jobim
Roberto Menescal
Luiz Bonfá

I'll second: Stan Getz - Saxaphone
And also:
Oscar Peterson - Piano
George Shearinig - Guitar
John Scofield - Guitar
Count Bassie - Big Band
Collin James and the Little Big Band - Modern Big Band
And for some modern jive - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Fantastic toe tapping Jazz

Also if you like the Brazilian Jazz check out the Cuban artists. Big Jazz scene there.

You may enjoy Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis. But it is something entirely to it's own.

The essential sax collection:
Bud Freeman
<a void in my preferences>
Charlie Parker
Sonny Stitt
Cannonball Adderley
John Coltrane
Micheal Brecker
Maceo Parker (both his blues and his funk are great)

Going to recommend:
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Michael Brecker - Tales from the Hudson
and Maceo Parker - Life on Planet Groove (technically funk)

If you want something really trippy you've just gotta check out the album version of Spain from Chic Coreas Akoustic Band.
This is the closest live I can find to the album one.. it's basically never the same way twice lol.

Apart from the above, also give Walter Wanderlay a shot. It is Bossa Nova jazz played via a Hammond B3 organ. Great stuff.
