Yet another turntable question

How is this: Denon DP-29F Analog Turntable (open for product shot, new, full warranty) ?

The thing is that it is for my family (out of college I will get my own, better, rig). That means that it must be simple. The built in phono stage is a big plus, as is the fact it is a current model, and thus under warranty and easier to service if the need arises.

So, is this good given the limitations? Or is there better for around $150?

Thanks,
Nkk

The warranty and built-in phono stage really aren't selling points. Separate phono stages tend to be much better than any onboard phono stage. Also, a warranty isn't really necessary for a well-made deck. Good ones rarely have problems and you can usually service them yourself.

I'd strongly recommend looking at the budget turntable threads in this forum. Find a used one and service it yourself. You only need a couple of tools you probably already have (e.g. screwdrivers, level) and you can print out the alignment tool yourself and use it.

Motors are usually long lived and replacements are usually available. The bearing will wear out or develop a flat spot every so often, but you can get a new one at a machine shop for $10-$20. New belts run $10-$20, as well, and can someimes be installed without tools. Changing the bearing oil is simple and you can use Mobil One 5W-30 synthetic for a few dollars. One quart will last forever.

It might seem intimidating right now, but keep in mind that turntables are not like buying a DSLR or a laptop. Those things are complicated and you truly need the warranty. A turntable, however, is simple and you can work on it yourself without extensive skills or expensive, specialized tools.

Anyhow, you're much better off buying a quality used turntable and servicing it yourself than buying a new, cheaply made turntable.
