Hello everyone,
thanks to the numerous replies in my last post I have a pretty good idea of what headphones would suit my sound preferences, which are clear sounding mids and treble with nice deep bass. When i say nice deep bass I do not mean overpowering bass that drowns out mids.

The phones I'm currently looking at are:

-ATH A900
- Beyerdynamic DT 831 & DT 770 & DT 990
- AKG 271s

I have ruled out etymotics and HD600 because from the reviews I've read, they have lacked bass. The amp i would be using with these phones would either be the Gilmore Lite, Meta 42, or perhaps another amp in the ~250$ department. Pros/Cons of these headphones would also be very helpful in helping me to make my decision,

Thanks, Brent

The HD600 doesn't lack bass. It's just that everything sounds a bit distant. Etys, not sure. Will know next week.

When I had the K271, I tried it out of my modded WAD, META42 and others. I liked it a lot. Not BOOM bass, but quite a lot without you realising it at first. The A900 is a fine all rounder and has a better soundstage, but in my opinion the K271 edges it out for overall reproduction and it doesn't provide the last thump of bass that the K271 managed to provide. I found the A900 more comfortable than the K271 and less isolated.

So in general, I'd recommend the 271.

I haven't heard the other 'fones, but the I love the DT770's. They're just super fun to listen to, and you can't beat the comfort. They're very forgiving and engaging phones. If you're looking for 100% perfect reproduction of the recording (flaws and all) then the DT770 isn't what you want, but if you're looking for a fun phone, then the 770 is awesome.

If i recall the 990's are the open 770's, so expect a wider soundstage, with less punch and less isolation. I've also heard the 831's are very bright, so i guess it depends on what you listen to.

Oh yah, I love my beyers.
